Sitting with a dying parent

This is night 4 of me sitting with my dad, we keep thinking we're losing him and then he rallies again in the daytime. He's in so much pain and struggling to breathe.
He's told me tonight he's afraid he's dying. What do you say to that? I've told him there's no need to be afraid, to just rest and leave everything else to me which seemed to help. Finally his morphine injection seems to have had some effect although he keeps calling out.
Not sure why I'm posting, just need to feel not so alone.

Nothing prepares you for this, so hard but at the same time a privilege to be with your Dad at this time. I’m sure he knows you’re there with him and he will be comforted by that.

I lost my mum recently and felt utterly exhausted for a couple of weeks after; it’s such a rollercoaster of emotions. Be gentle with yourself 💐

My thoughts are with you. It's so hard. I sat with my mum for hours, had to nip home to let the dogs out and she passed in the 30 mins I was gone. I heard that happens often. It is a release to finally see them pain free, hard though it is. Look after yourself x

Thinking of you. I found that mine passed after I finally “gave in” and went to bed as I couldn’t stay awake any longer. I think that’s very common.

My dad passed away peacefully a few hours ago, we were all with him. Thank you everyone for your kindness and support.

@Flev I’m so very sorry for your loss. You were beside your Dad throughout and he will have known that. You have surrounded him by love. I hope, in time, that can bring some comfort. Sending you love today. Get some rest when you can.

Now is the time to look after yourself
My mum died in hospital on a Friday evening. I found that to be a blessing in some ways as I couldn't "action' anything, I could relax and decompress over the weekend. I hope this also works for you. X

I’m really sorry for your loss, my husband went through the same situation to yours when his parents died within 6 months of each other. I hope you take comfort that people that loved him were there at the end.
We were so ignorant about death and dying but I discovered Dr Kathryn Mannix being interviewed on the podcast Griefcast after my PIL died and after listening to that and reading her book With The End In Mind I feel so much better about knowing what is happening should my parents be in a similar position.

It’s hard , but being there and supporting him ultimately helps you both, my sisters and I spent 5 days with our mum, always at least one of us there all the time and all there for the last 10 hours, so pleased we did
