Am I expecting too much

For them ever to ask how you are? I call and they tell me their woes and I help etc, but they never ask how I am doing / feeling?

Mine is just like this. Never asks after me or DH. Only wants to know stories about DD she can share with her friends so she can pretend to be an involved grandparent.

The other year she wouldn't ask any details about how I was. I had a really painful problem affecting my ability to drive. She ignored any attempt I made to mention this and shut down all conversation by talking about herself or her neighbours. She then got admitted to hospital in an emergency and was furious I hadn't driven straight to her bedside. Then tried to cover her back when it became obvious she should have known I physically couldn't do that!
