Perfume help please

A bit of a different topic here. My Parents in Law are both in a care home together and due to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary soon which is quite an achievement. They are having a party in the home. Mother in Law has asked us to get her some perfume, it was not something she ever really wore and I only wear one type which is quite heavy so not really for her I do not think. I also do not want to buy anything expensive. She used to like Avon products and although I do not like MLM I was considering something from them. Can anyone suggest something light and floral which would be suitable for an elderly lady please. Thanks

I love the Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia perfume - it's quite light and a really lovely scent.

M&S are very good for perfumes, they have lots of different florals.

ghislaine · 07/10/2023 17:25

Something from the Yardley florals range?

Exactly what I was going to say!

They have Florentyna (spelling?) which has been a big seller for years, and also a set of 3 mini florals. (Obviously they have more than this, but these sprung to mind!)

Liz Earle does some nice light floral scents, not too overpowering or too expensive. Would suit an elderly lady (I’m one myself and use Liz Earle regularly!)

Surely has to be Armani Diamonds for a diamond anniversary

LoserWinner · 07/10/2023 17:29

If you can get it, I’d put money on Ma Griffe by Carven being a good choice. For that generation of women, it was THE scent.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/10/2023 17:34

Avon online. You can get Today, Tomorrow & Always in purse size (10ml each) for £6 each. All light florals. Gives her a choice.
Incandessence is nice.
None are heavy.
Hope they have a lovely anniversary.

My grandmother (who would be 125) wore Ma Griffe and Yardley.

My mother (80s) liked Obsession, Angel, Rive Gauche, Ysatis, Opium etc. (the hard-hitting chypres of the 80s and 90s)

If I were buying perfume for someone whose tastes I wasn't sure of and didn't want to spend much, I'd go for one of the M&S ones, or maybe one of the Monothemes. (Mediterranean Coast is lovely as is the Agrumes di Sicilia)

They do a very nice Gardenia one and the Seasalt and Neroli is lovely and light.

I'm almost 60 and not quite into lavendar and rose water just yet. Prefer niche spices like Coromandel and 4160 Court of Ravens.

cardiganboo · 07/10/2023 17:42

I'd defo go with a wee bottle of Jo Malone.

Wild Bluebell is gorgeous

Thank you for your suggestions everyone, I am going to have a look and a sniff perhaps 😀

@SoIinvictus I've got a couple of the Monotheme perfumes from M&S, including the Agrume de Sicilia, it's gorgeous.

RJnomore1 · 07/10/2023 22:08

soft iris from m n s would be perfect I think

LoserWinner · 08/10/2023 10:11

Do let us know what you choose!

Hayfeveroverseason · 08/10/2023 10:18

My Grandma loves m&s Floryntina, as a pp mentioned, you can get the perfume and toiletries to match. M&s is good generally for perfumes. Another pp said Armani Diamonds, which is nice and light. I brought our mums CK Eternity, which is nice, light and floral. There is a rose perfume which is lovely and often sold at the supermarkets, I can't remember the brand!

Hayfeveroverseason · 08/10/2023 10:19

just googled, it's Paul Smith Rose!

AnnaMagnani · 08/10/2023 10:20

My DM in her 80s used to wear Rive Gauche as well.

Ma Griffe is now a sad reformulated thing and probably unrecognisable from the original.

Clinique. Aromatic Elixer.

Can I ask, @Diversion, whether there’s a reason other than actual affordability why you don’t want to get anything expensive?

It’s only that my strong inclination with my nonagenarian relative is to surround her with as much luxury as I can. She’s always worn perfume and isn’t really interested in ‘retro anything’. The last perfume I gave her was from Frederic Malle …

Borntobeamum · 08/10/2023 17:24

Can I just say how important perfume is.

I lost both my parents in the last year and have been clearing their home prior to selling it.
We’ve brought quite a lot of their furniture back to our house and stored it in the garage.

Whenever I go in, I can smell my mum and it gives me great comfort.

She was a beautiful lady and glamorous to the end. She always smelled beautiful, even in the care home, the staff would help her choose what scent she wanted.

Id suggest you buy her a couple of different ones. They don’t have to be expensive but she will enjoy wearing them 💗

LivelyBlake · 08/10/2023 17:29

The Fragonard range at M&S is lovely

ghislaine · 08/10/2023 18:18

These are not cheap but Aqua di Parma colognes are really nice and fresh. I live the orange one.

Yardley lily of the valley
