Has anyone else got a child starting CE tomorrow? Anyone want to hand hold etc?

LIZS · 17/06/2010 15:41

eek, we've got all this to come next year ....

singersgirl · 17/06/2010 15:51

So what are the threshold marks for A, B, C, D etc? We have a version of this to come next year.

abr1de · 17/06/2010 16:16

Well that's the point: they vary from school to school. They're not really public exams in the same way that GCSE is. So a less academic school might award an A where a more academic one would give a B or a C.

Funny old system, really.

abr1de · 17/06/2010 16:20

Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude with my first phrase!

singersgirl · 17/06/2010 16:44

Oh, no, you didn't; it's all a bit new to me. DS1 has moved into Y7 of a prep which is linked to a senior school and I know what pass mark they ask for, but I just don't know if that's in all papers or across the board...Judging from this year's exam performance, he's not likely to get in!

prayingforababy · 17/06/2010 19:39

Now I'm worried. I thought 70% were A's but this is looking unlikely! Ah well.

Congrats to your son for passing! Go on, what school did your bright lad get into?

midtowner · 17/06/2010 20:31

Congratulations to your son abr1de!

Mine passed too . Very relieved.

abr1de · 17/06/2010 21:11

Well done to your son, midtowner! Where's the wine? I think we deserve a glass AT LEAST.

70% may well be As, prayingforababy. We have no idea what marks attached themselves to the grades we've been given today. All it says on the letter is that A means 'Excellent, well above Common Entrance level', B is 'Good Common Entrance Performance, C is 'Sound Common Entrance performance, down to D, 'borderline at Common Entrance'.

I'd rather not give the school's name exactly as it could well identify me to others (sounds neurotic, I know) but I'll give you a clue and tell you that it recently appointed a head who caused a stir as they are one of the first for that particular type of school. Just don't post the name on the board if you get it!

prayingforababy · 17/06/2010 21:26

You have very good taste in schools and it is very selective!

abr1de · 17/06/2010 21:42

Thank you, I thought you might get it!

soda1234 · 17/06/2010 23:32

My son is in too (v.proud, he did really well).abr1de, I believe our boys are going to the same school!

Oh how funny! Second letter B... Last letter N...?

soda1234 · 18/06/2010 09:13

Yes!

prayingforababy · 18/06/2010 09:31

I know a boy who goes and loves it.

soda1234 · 18/06/2010 09:35

abr1de, am I correct in assuming the letter you refer to was from his prep school? The letter we have had from senior school just confirms offer of a place.
Induction on the 29th?

Whoops!

Hullygully · 18/06/2010 11:50

If 70% is an A (mostly) my ds got all As. He got 99% in maths, 98% in Biology and 97% in physics.

abr1de · 18/06/2010 12:45

soda, the letter with the grades was from the senior school. That is the induction day date we have too. How funny!

Well done to your son, Hullygully! Our school doesn't break down the science into percentages, just the grades.

soda1234 · 18/06/2010 13:56

abr1de,just being nosey, did your letter come in the post or was it picked up at school?
My DS is away with the school this week, the Headmaster drove down to speak to them all individually yesterday, and I had a call from DS (about 30secs) at about 4pm. I'm guessing the more detailed letter went to school and they just condensed it to a sheet with grades to give to the kids.

thedollyridesout · 18/06/2010 14:10

Hullygully - I am sure you can claim a lot of credit . I'm always being told on here how important the parent's input to their DC's education is. A brilliant set of results - well done to your DS

abr1de · 18/06/2010 15:14

The grades came direct to the school, and were handed to the boys.

The confirmation letter from the new school went directly here, to us.

Complicated system, but it seemed to work.

soda1234 · 18/06/2010 17:41

DS is home, looking really tanned and v tired.Apparently the whole year did well, the school's best CE results ever.Abr1de, the head told DS that an A is 85% at this senior school!

OP posts:
abr1de · 18/06/2010 18:28

Gosh--perhaps I'll buy my son a packet of crisps in that case!

I'm glad your son did well. Sounds like a strong year.

wangle99 · 18/06/2010 19:48

Only just seen this thread, with I'd noticed it while DD was taking hers last week. She just phoned me with the results - Maths B and everything else was A!!!! I hope her headmaster is eating his words because he sat with me and sat patronisingly 'well DD isn't a very academic child is she' PAH!!!!!

Am SO proud of her as she has no confidence (not sure why!) and she is so pleased )
