Good Luck.

My DD got sooo nervous on her Grade 2 violin that she stopped part way through a wobbly piece & burst into tears The examiner was very nice & asked her to start again when she was ready. She passed

The best advice I can give is keep going.

In the sight reading if the notes are not totally correct try and get the rhythm right. Use the time he is given to look through the music to work out rhythms and try out tricky bits.

Give a performance not just playing the notes.

and for future reference there is a book called These Music Exams which gives tips and what is expected at each grade.

Good luck to him.

And practice whichever scales and arpeggios he is weakest on - because those are the ones he will be asked to do: it's sod's law, I think the examiners are trained to mind read and they pick up that you are thinking "don't ask me E Minor...don't ask me E Minor..."

That's a joke, btw...deep breaths, RTKM.

hunkermunker · 07/07/2005 22:08

No tips, but good luck! Talented boy you have there, RTKM!

RTKangaMummy · 07/07/2005 22:14

Thanks marthamoo and HMunker

He doesn't really have one particular problem piece although the middle of "MATCH OF THE DAY" goes wobbly sometimes

9 of my pupils have just given their first concert today (piano) a couple were super nervous and kept stuffing up their run through. I sussed that it was in the hope I would pull them out of the concert (I don't even think they were aware of that being the reason) and I just said - "look if you get stuck - just make it up until you can get back on track". Making something up is actually harder than just knuckling down and getting it right, so they played perfectly!

Depends on the kid, but I think "keep going" can be a bit meaningless to some children. I find myself being more specific "no stopping, no saying whoops and try to keep the time even if the notes go wrong".

Remind him to take a big breath before he starts.

Heep a cool head and a damp pair of socks

Don't ask it is just one of those things we say in our house.

RTKangaMummy · 09/07/2005 12:19

He played them through once this morning perfectly.

He is nervous this morning which of course is understandable

He is at Drama club atm so that will take his mind of it for now.

We let you know later what how it goes.

I am so glad he is 1st, so he doesn't have to listen to the others before he goes in.

RTKangaMummy · 09/07/2005 15:54

Thanks everyone

You are all DEFFO BRILL

KangaBoy had the exam at 2.15pm

He was very very nervous.

The accompianist arrived and talked him through what was going to happen.

He did some warm up notes in the waiting room

The next boy arrived just before DS went in

We could not hear him play very well cos the dad of next boy kept talking

The accompianist came out as he only accompanies 2 pieces he said DS valves stuck on first piece so he started that one again

His valves do keep sticking sometimes

So we were told that results will be here in 2 weeks straight to DS teacher so if we give him our phone number he can let us know

Thank you for all of your tips and support.

I tried to keep my nerves under control while we were there. I think I succeeded I felt sort of self conscious with the other dad there

DS has gone to a party now, this has been one heck of a day

Your support has been DEFFO BRILL though

Will let you know what results he gets.

Valves stick - the examiner will be very used to this, and while it's annoying it's not serious. Well done to your boy.

RTKangaMummy · 10/07/2005 00:11

Thanks

Well done for getting through it KangaBoy!

Is it my imagination, or can you get such a thing as valve oil??? (I am a musical dunce, but my sister used to play a brass instrument, and I'm sure that I've heard her mention this... at least, I hope it's her that's mentioned it, and not my dad, who's a mechanic or I'll feel very !!!)

Roll on Grade 2!

Janh · 10/07/2005 20:17

Yes, you can, ellbell - DS2 had a little bottle of it in his horn case (and I think DD2 used to borrow her teacher's for her flute, although I might have dreamt that - flutes have pads rather than valves!)

But I think valves have a tendency to stick regardless.

Glad you both kept your nerves under control, Kanga. I know just what you mean about the talking father, I had silence for the first few minutes of DS2's piano exam and then a woman came in with 2 girls and a sleeping baby in a buggy, and the younger girl squeaked (church hall, wooden floor, wearing trainers) round and round and round with the sodding buggy until I wanted to scream!

We can swap results in a couple of weeks.....
