My DD will be going for the 4+ 'play group' asesssment at Haberdashers soon. Does anyone know what they are asked to do/what they are looking for? There is very little information given by the school. Many thanks

BitOfFun · 02/01/2010 20:52

A bit of advanced embroidery, perhaps? How is his cross-stitch?

GleeE4 · 02/01/2010 20:53

estimate the gold price?

sell bunting cupcakes?

GloriaInEccentrica · 02/01/2010 20:53

assessment for playgroup? oh my fucking god.

GleeE4 · 02/01/2010 20:54

yes
tell them " fuck your stupid school i have no interest in haberdashery"

traceybath · 02/01/2010 20:55

Glee and Bof you're on form tonight

OP - normally they just observe your DD play/interact with oter children. Not sure if haberdashers does anything more than other prep schools - is it very over-subscribed?

thisisyesterday · 02/01/2010 20:56

haberdashers???

quite frankly, if they need an assessment for playgroup i'd steer well clear!

Maleeka · 02/01/2010 20:56

Good grief as long as she isnt eating worms at the time, thats enough for a 4 yr old

GleeE4 · 02/01/2010 20:57

if she doesnt get in will she have to mix with poor people?

stressed2007 · 02/01/2010 21:00

Please read precisely

It is n't an assessment for playgroup but a "play group" assessment for primary school (4+ entrance)

Yes it is still heavily oversubscribed and all I have gleaned to date is just to turn up with daughter where she is taken for a "play group" session for an hour or 2. No ideas what they are assessing.

??????
Sorry can't follow this

Because the very concept of assessing a 4 year old to see whether he/she is good enough for your school is horrible

thisisyesterday · 02/01/2010 21:04

well if you know will you coach her in how to behave?

really?
just take her. she needs to just be herself

stressed2007 · 02/01/2010 21:05

How else would they decide what 20 they take from 400+ applications?

OP posts:
Batteryhuman · 02/01/2010 21:08

First come first served, lottery, catchment, any number of ways but testing 4 year olds. Sorry I am not intending to be rude but it is another world and one I do not understand.

GleeE4 · 02/01/2010 21:09

knitting
its the way
knit one pearl one

stressed2007 · 02/01/2010 21:11

No you are not being rude. I would go for lottery. Might increase our chances

OP posts:
LadyBlaBlah · 02/01/2010 21:13

I would imagine they will be assessing for signs of chavness

DoesntTheTurkeyDragOn · 02/01/2010 21:15

Holy cr*p! 4+? I'm stressing about DS1 doing 11+ entrance exams next week.

They'll probably just be watched. Any that steal stuff will be dropped, any that turn down the organic fruit smoothies in favour of the Fruit Shoots will be excluded and any that can turn on and use a Wii/DS Lite will be shown the door.

foxinsocks · 02/01/2010 21:16

they are assessing you not her I reckon

(in my antenatal group, 4 families went for private schools and had to attend these things and it was definitely more of a parental screening)

GleeE4 · 02/01/2010 21:18

ANY child who shows any signs of having taken part in the last decade id OUT

anyoen looking like little lord fauntleroy or princess margaret rose is in

bugger...bar the stealing (which we don't do) that is us out then!

No wonder your name is stressed2007! I've just put DD1 through an 11+ entrance exam and that was bad enough.

I wouldn't have entertained the idea of testing for a school place before that age though. Is it really necessary and what messages are we giving very small children (dare I say, babies?)

tispity · 02/01/2010 21:38

my dd got into Habs a few years back but we actually declined the place as we were not keen on the school run from Highgate (yes, they thought we were mad!!!). dh took her rather than myself and he is a bit too chlled out so i don't have much detailed advice - i think he said that dd told the teacher the Nativity Story and was reading out all the things on the noticeboard (she was reading/writing/talking a LOT earlier than ds who has just started school and nowhere near that level).

dd now attends a prep school nearer to home (her choice, not ours). this has enabled her to stay with her friends whom she has known from birth.

ijustwanttoaskaquestion · 02/01/2010 21:39

Whats haberdashers?? I only ask as my SIL went there, and im quite confused because (and im absolutely not being rude or insulting at all) but she is as chavvie as they come and from what im reading here it seems quite posh?

OP - i can't BELIEVE you are even allowing your child to be ASSESSED already - they get enough of that shit later in life - fuck that school!
