I've gone back to Uni as a mature student this year and have met plenty of people in that age bracket.

The young 'uns are still make up the majority obviously, but it's not that odd iyswim?

Dh did, taking wife (me) and two small boys with him. But his was a PG course at a PG university so most people were in their 30s.

FrankCross · 09/12/2009 17:19

Woman - it's my obscure Christmas name

I'm studying Archaeology & Anthropology

What do you want to go back and study?

EccentricaGallumbits · 09/12/2009 17:21

Me. rght now.

northender · 09/12/2009 17:25

My aunty went to college when her dh left. She was about 45 I think and is now working as a speech therapist. I'm so proud of her. It wasn't easy but she has no regrets.

FabIsVeryFestive · 09/12/2009 17:28

Someone I went to school is now doing their Masters and it has got me thinking.

tis bloody hard work to fit it all in but i'm much more motivated now, as an adult, than i ever was a s a stroppy teenager.

poinsettydawg · 09/12/2009 17:32

yeah me, and others I know

orangina · 09/12/2009 17:36

I'm doing a pg masters and some of the people on the course do seem very young (have more or less just finished their undergraduate studies), but I am by no means the oldest... I'm loving it, but feeling rather overwhelmed by adding it into my already very busy life!

telsa · 09/12/2009 17:44

yes, I teach in a university college that largely only accepts mature students - and much the better it is for it too.

uglymugly · 09/12/2009 17:46

I did a BA in Philosophy when I was in my 30s. I wasn't the oldest.

Hard work, especially as I had two children in primary school at the time. Hurt my brain, but at least I have a piece of paper that proves I had have one.

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 09/12/2009 17:53

I did, when I was 34. I am now in my final year of my degree at Birkbeck which specialises in evening education, predominately for mature students. I love it. I did not do a degree when I was younger, but as an adult I really appreciate listening to other people's experiences. They are a really diverse group of people on my course and have a lot to say!

What are you thinking of doing?

Acinonyx · 09/12/2009 17:58

Did a masters at 39/40, then a PhD in my 40s (finished this year). I was the oldest student in my dept but there are quite a lot in their 30s. The hard part is not age - it's having dc and chores to fit in that younger folk generally don't have.

orangina · 09/12/2009 17:59

Exactly Acinonyx.

primarymum · 09/12/2009 18:26

I went back to University and did my PGCE in my early 40's and wasn't the oldest on my course.

SuWoombOfImmaculateConception · 09/12/2009 18:37

I've been accepted to start next year to do English with Cultural Studies. Will do a PGCE after that.

FabIsVeryFestive · 09/12/2009 18:38

I would love to be a social worker as a real job or make cakes all day for a fun job.

I went back to do a PGDip law when I was 37 as I had never done much with my psychology degree. I totally fell in love with law and wished I had done it years ago. However, I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant with my third child just before my finals which kind of scuppered my ambitions. I did start a masters when DD was 2 but never finished it - now I'm in Oz where my qualifications aren't recognised anyway!

SofiaAmes · 10/12/2009 04:39

My dh went back to school in his 40's. He had never even done A-levels as a child. He went from college, to an HND course, to Middlesex University where he got an undergraduate degree in Business Administration. And he is now doing a second undergraduate degree in Geology at Leeds at the ripe old age of 48. He is the oldest person on his course by many years, but this hasn't bothered him in the least. I wonder if that says something about his maturity. (grin) Because he's not 18 and just leaving home, he doesn't have the same need to spend inordinate amounts of time drinking and having sex. He is in the UK and I am in the USA with the kids, so he hasn't had to juggle home life and the kids and studies pretty much all of the time. The hardest part is the lack of financial assistance from the government.

nooka · 10/12/2009 06:04

My BIL is doing a Theology degree/diploma (I'm a bit hazy on this, but it's two days a week) and he is probably in his 50s. I did some professional qualifications at night school, and I know several other people who have done that. Some of the students were much younger, but there was quite a spread.
