How standard is it for a thirteen year old to take a day off school on their birthday in order to go birthday present shopping with their mum?

Not very standard at all, I'd have said.

Hassled · 23/09/2009 10:39

Have quizzed DD who has never come across it.

Not known at all in my world. Have done it after school though.

bruffin · 23/09/2009 10:48

I wouldn't. DD's was 12 on friday and she had a lovely day at school.

AMumInScotland · 23/09/2009 10:51

Not something I've heard of happening, though DS always falls on halfterm anyway. But no way I'd give him a day off just because of a birthday.

claricebeansmum · 23/09/2009 10:51

Not standard at all.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 23/09/2009 10:52

Not standard at all. I wouldn't do it.

gorionine · 23/09/2009 10:53

Never heard of anyone doing it before today.

Buda · 23/09/2009 11:01

Never heard of it. DS is August though so it won't arise in our house.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 23/09/2009 11:14

Phew!
Had been led to believe it was the natural progression from pass-the-parcel.

EccentricaGallumbits · 23/09/2009 11:17

N. I'm cruel and have forced the DDs to school on theirs, despite never having gone on mine (August) and also ensuring I always book a day off work for mine too

asdx2 · 23/09/2009 12:00

It doesn't happen here, I send them with birthday cake to share with their friends

nappyaddict · 23/09/2009 12:17

I would give DS a day off if he wanted one

deaddei · 23/09/2009 17:59

Why nappyaddict?

janeite · 23/09/2009 18:04

Absolutely not on.

cory · 23/09/2009 18:19

never heard of it

foxinsocks · 23/09/2009 18:21

nah

though I have been AMAZED how many colleagues have taken the day off from work on their birthdays.

pagwatch · 23/09/2009 18:22

No. Does not happen here or amongst DCs peers.

But my Dcs like going to school to see their friends on their birthdays

IWantCleanCarpets · 23/09/2009 18:25

No

mumblechum · 23/09/2009 18:32

DSs b/day always seems to fall one or two days before the start of Sept term, so hasn't arisen.

I often take my birthday off as I really hate my job.

elmofan · 23/09/2009 18:44

i have let ds stay off school on his birthday once or twice but he is still in primary school . he then brings in cake & goodies to school the next day .

FritesMenthe · 23/09/2009 18:49

Not on at all.

malovitt · 23/09/2009 18:53

I made DS go into school (year 7) on his birthday last year and he came home covered in bruises from getting 'birthday beats' from other pupils. Completely spoiled his day.

Although it's apparently only done in the first year of secondary around our way, he's having this year's birthday off, and will come out shopping for goodies with me.

Milliways · 23/09/2009 18:54

No! They get spoiled with extra attention at school - and you get some time to prepare the house for birthday tea etc.
