How standard is it for a thirteen year old to take a day off school on their birthday in order to go birthday present shopping with their mum?

We are in Herts and I think DS mentioned birthday beats in the past and he didn't seem too bothered by them, but both DC's had birthdays in the last couple of weeks and neither mentioned this time.

My DD's 13th birthday will be on a Saturday next year, so no excuse for a day off (not that she would be allowed anyway)

No. I was always a bit disappointed that my birthday is in August and I never got any fuss made at school. As a teacher I still have this problem! I like the fact that my kids can take cake into school and so on and the day is made special for them there as well as at home. They then get a party at the weekend so it's a whole sequence of events rahter than over with in a second.

A girl in my tutor group had a birthday last week and wandered around all day clutching a helium balloon and the giving away of gift bags from her friends. We sang happy birthday to her. She cringed at that. She's 15
