Do the words "my child goes to prep school" anger you?

I started another thread and mentoned that my son went to prep school. I was shocked as I thought MN was all-inclusive, or should I start an alternative site called "MaterNet"

don't people say independant all the time

i use 'private' to get my friends backs up ( in jest)

ReneRusso · 10/09/2009 21:13

I think "independent" is widely used... and maybe not quite as inflammatory as "private" or "prep" (to those that worry about these things)

Quattrocento · 10/09/2009 21:15

I think Pielight was being ironic

Well it depends on the context. I mention prep school at work because most of my colleagues have children in the independent sector and it's no biggy. In other circles I tend not to mention it in case people suspect showing off and general smuggery

dogonpoints · 10/09/2009 21:22

you are sucha smug show off, quatt

Pielight · 10/09/2009 21:24

Oh yes she was, she was being more silly than ironic though. And she is now going to celebrate her silliness by only talking about herself in the third person. Unless anyone utters those dreaded words in the thread title - because then I will BOIL and EXPLODE with fury.

mrcerec · 10/09/2009 21:32

No I am not a troll, but I find it interesting that just because I post a subject that is contentious , I am called a troll. Is it because I am a man? I feel it is, therefore sexist.

Disappointing attitude from some of the posters.

"Disappointing attitude from some of the posters."

are you a teacher?

mrcerec · 10/09/2009 21:36

nope - not even close

OP posts:
dogonpoints · 10/09/2009 21:39

hmm, an over-serious type of job obv

Pielight · 10/09/2009 21:40

I think some of these posters have not just let themselves down but the whole board. They need to realize that they are a part of a community and that rules exist for a reason.

I had those words in a school report once. HELLO dogofpoints 100x here.

mrcerec · 10/09/2009 21:41

you could say that.... a job where I have to take people's well-being really seriously - hence my argument with the school.

OP posts:
MaggieVirgo · 10/09/2009 21:41

No!

The words, "taxpayers money" they annoy me.

Pielight · 10/09/2009 21:41

It had been a very disappointing term

not for me though, quite the opposite

dogonpoints · 10/09/2009 21:43

ah! cursed namechangers. hello 100. I am on points now, by the way

Mr, you;re not a health and safety officer, are you

MaggieVirgo · 10/09/2009 21:43

I didn't read the original thread... so I'll shuffle off now.

dogonpoints · 10/09/2009 21:43

The fog lifts, all is clear

My ds goes to school. He is 5 so he is at primary school. It is a pre-prep but I really don't see the relevance. He is at school, some of his friends are at his school, some are at other schools.

What on earth is the relevance? When I meet someone new with ds there is a presumption that he is of school age and the only discussion is what year. If we are local then they might ask the name but I don't then say that ds is at pre-prep don't ya know [snob emoticon]. Sometimes ds lets it slip by saying that 'we don't have girls at our school' which tends to give away the independent tag.

mrcerec · 10/09/2009 21:45

this is getting esoteric

no not h&s btw

OP posts:
MaggieVirgo · 10/09/2009 21:45

could be a really old fashioned catholic boys' school! I know of one.

dogonpoints · 10/09/2009 21:47

a lumberjack?

mrcerec · 10/09/2009 21:48

no, but cutting is involved

OP posts:
noodlesoup · 10/09/2009 21:48

I think you were called a troll because you were over-reacting a tiny bit about your ds geting hit by a ball during a game.

Then because one poster said prep schools made MNers riled you started a whole new thread, even though no-one was actually riled at all.

Plus everyone is antsy about the DM so suspicious of everyone who has been posting for less than about 5 years.

What were you shocked by exactly?

noodlesoup · 10/09/2009 21:49

Surgeon

mrcerec · 10/09/2009 21:50

What is the DM?

I was shocked that people would antsy about me using the phrase "prep school"

OP posts:
pagwatch · 10/09/2009 21:50

DS1 is 16 and DD is 7. I can't actually think of an occasion where I have ever had to utter those words. And the only place in the whole of my experience where I ever have cause to discuss the type of school my children attend is on mumsnet.

I think the only people who go on about it are the ones who view it as having a social cache and those who loath it.So when these threads start the discussion always ends up being between those who have an arse they want to pick

MOst people in real life couldn't give a toss.
