peachygirl · 02/07/2008 19:40

I have been on UPS1 for 4 years now I have been to ask my head about moving up and she said it would need to be discussed and criteria met etc.

I wondered about other peoples experiences.

You should be able to move up after 2 years on each UPS point. From what I understand, the criteria are quite woolly - sustained improvement or some other such boll*cks. I managed to by-pass the whole thing by going onto the leadership scale and then back off again

peachygirl · 02/07/2008 19:44

The NUT website has a document which I looked at today and it said two years of performance management meetings should be taken into account.
Last academic year I was on mat leave so although did complete my targets I am slightly worried I might get stiffed on this.

Everyone in our school on ups1/2 moves up after 2 years. I did about 4 or 5 years ago, and am on ups3 now
I thought it was meant to be every 2 years until you reached ups3.....I'm sure it is in fact

Nowhere else to go of course after ups3....but you stil have to do performance management crap

Don't know why it posted twice...

Am convinced it is meant to be every 2 years now the more I think about it. You may not get it, but you should automatically qualify in each cycle of performance management.

Methinks your head is trying to pull a fast one. I work in ahuge school with really strong unions, and I am sure this what happens. If you work in a little school, your head may be getting away with something

spudmasher · 02/07/2008 21:01

I thought there was a bit extra to do to get to UPS3.....some sort of folder of evidence....or hoop to jump through or something.....

fizzbuzz · 02/07/2008 21:07

I didn't do a folder of eveidence (3 years ago), I just met my stupid performance targets

i thought the unions had kicked out the evidence bit as unecessary workload

spudmasher · 02/07/2008 21:09

And what were your performance targets fizzbuzz?
I had one once that was to learn to use the interactive whiteboard!!! Our favourite trick is to put down stuff we have already done!

fizzbuzz · 02/07/2008 21:27

Ha ha ha

My targets are always some ICT crap that there is never enough money to fund and never happens anyway. (in fact this years was...yes the interactive whiteboard... andhave I recieved any training? No) In fact our version of your trick, is to choose really expensive stuff to do with ICT which they can never fund (tee hee)...and now it has to be tied to the whole department review, the entire department pull this trick.

Will try your version next time...only way to keep sane

I agree with Malory, "progression through the upper pay scales is automatic if performance management targets are met" I think someone needs to tell your head Peachy....

janeite · 02/07/2008 21:32

After UPS3 you can always go for AST status, which is a bit more money for teachers who want to stay in the classroom rather than go into management. That's what I've just done. The money difference is tiny really tbh but it does justify the job of classroom teacher a bit more, for those of us who never wanted to become deputies etc.

Peachy - it does sound like your head is trying to pull a fast one there. In most places, meeting the PM targets equals automatic movement up the scale. With the new PM requirements, your line manger should have to say if they think you deserve to move up.

spudmasher · 02/07/2008 21:34

LOL LOL LOL.
Will try your trick next year.
I want to develop my skills in using digital media in art and dance.

fizzbuzz · 02/07/2008 21:37

There is np money for AST's at our school...

Peachy have you been taking part in the 2 yearly cycle thingy? If you have and have passed them all, you should have automatically moved up. They might owe you back pay.........

cece · 02/07/2008 21:43

Yes just go up every two years if performance management stuff OK. Now on UPS3 and no extra hoops to jump through for it.

fizzbuzz · 02/07/2008 21:46

Yes, anything with the word digital means ££££..........

peachygirl · 04/07/2008 17:46

Wow, such a lot of replies!

Not sure about the two yearly cycle. We have PM meetings every year and this year IMO I have achieved my targets.

What makes me very suspicious that my head is being a bit naughty is the fact that this should have been bought up two years ago but it has never been mentioned.

I've been at this school 4 years next academic year will be my 5th.

I know it won't be required but I do have evidence I can find.

One good tip is to have target about going on a course, especially one you have already spotted as being a good one. This year I had one about going on a course on how to write a music policy. and I did about three weeks ago.. tick

I did ask one teacher about it but she has only just been through the threshold despite teaching longer than I have. I will ask a couple of other people.

Thanks everyone... roll on the summer hols

You don't need evidence, and progression should be automatic if you have met PM targets. I thought this was the whole point of it!

"Application of Upper Pay Scale Progression Criteria ? Clarification

UPS3 teachers play a critical role in the life of the school. They provide a role model for teaching and learning, make a distinctive contribution to the raising of pupil standards and contribute effectively to the work of the wider team. They take advantage of appropriate opportunities for professional development and use the outcomes effectively to improve pupils? learning.

The following paragraphs refer to all teachers seeking to progress on the Upper Pay Scale.

To achieve progression, the School Teachers? Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD) requires that the achievements of post-threshold teachers and their contribution to school(s) should have been substantial and sustained. To be fair and transparent, judgements must be properly rooted in evidence and there must have been a successful review of overall performance.

Progression on UPS should be based on two successful consecutive performance management reviews , other than under the exceptional circumstances as set out in STPCD.

A successful performance review as prescribed by the appraisal regulations involves a performance management process of

performance objectives
classroom observation
other evidence

To ensure that the achievements and contribution have been substantial and sustained, that performance review will need to assess that the teacher has:

continued to meet threshold standards; and
grown professionally by developing their teaching expertise post threshold

DfES/0420/2004"

iamdingdong · 05/07/2008 13:35

as mrz's info shows, evidence is most definitely needed and progression is not intended to be automatic, UPS is about doing over and above normal teacher dtuies - if you are lucky enough to wokr in a shcool that hasn't caught on to this yet that's great, but most will require you to porve you deserve the extra

mrz · 05/07/2008 13:45

evidence doesn't need to be written/recorded.

fizzbuzz · 05/07/2008 20:40

It is automatic if you have met your targets. If you haven't then it isn't. Ups 3 is slightly different as you have to be a lead teacher and all that other stuff. But you don't have to produce evidence, I'm sure. Your Line manager or whoever does your review, eg Head of Dept, should know waht you are doing.

I have never ever produced any evidence, and have gone up through all the UPS to point 3 every 2nd year. I have simply told my line manager what I have done, and she writes it down. I know some people do more in the year running up to UPS 3, but I have never known anyone produce evidence

mrz · 05/07/2008 20:52

I'm UPS3 and not a lead teacher

fizzbuzz · 05/07/2008 21:14

No not lead teacher...neither am I. I meant that stuff you wrote about UPS3.
