Do schools / colleges get GCSE results the day before

Yes, I know I’ll have to wait until tomorrow but I want to be as prepared as possible as I’m working away all day and want to make sure I can support DD…

So my DD (just turned 17, some SEN and terrible anxiety that meant she was home schooled for years 10 and 11).

she got nearly all the GCSEs she needed to get into 6th form and is now doing a cracking job in her A levels, predicted to do really well and wants to go to Uni next year which we couldn’t have imagined her saying a year ago.

she’s always struggled with maths. Did the foundation paper last year and got a 3. Resat in November and got a 3 again (also had to cope with the change from IGCSE which her previous paper was to GCSE which includes a non calculator paper she’d never done at IGCSE).

she did her second retake this spring and gets her result tomorrow.

She said she checked her 6th form timetable today and maths is gone from it and she’s been scheduled into other lessons so into her maths slot, there is no longer maths on her timetable.

She says this happened to her mates who passed in November, their timetables had maths removed (while hers didn’t as she hadn’t passed).

is it possible that her 6th form college had results today and have adjusted accordingly?

I’ve only added all the waffle at the start of this post to explain why I’m so invested and yes I know I need to wait but I just want to go to bed hoping for the gear tomorrow.

Any insights?

So she’s just finished year 12 and going into year 13 I should have said that

Yes but only certain people will be told. Exams officer (obviously) plus SLT.

MrsHamlet · 20/08/2025 19:52

Yes they do but the information is embargoed so they can't share it.

howdoyoudoyoudoit · 20/08/2025 19:53

Hoping for the best. Sorry I’m on my phone and terrible at typing

I wouldn’t read too much into that. They may have done that in November due to the small
number of candidates who sat them. I wish her all the best. It took me 7 times to pas my Maths O Level!

Sorry, I don’t understand your post. They took maths off the timetables of the kids who passed as they no longer needed to attend maths lesson. Nothing to do with class sizes

It is a possibility but unlikely that the day before results day, teachers are dicking about with the timetable. They are deciding who can have a place in 6th form, not sorting out year 13 timetables.

MrsHamlet · 20/08/2025 19:56

We don't routinely offer resit classes in y13, and the y12 and 13 timetables are different. So that might be why it's vanished.

I don’t think teachers have any involvement in timetabling at all, and wasn’t suggesting they do

Thank you that’s helpful. DD’s 6th form college definitely does do maths resits in year 13 so it sounds hopeful

More likely they haven't put resits onto the timetable yet as they need to see who passed? Maybe?

Possible, yes

Good point. We don't timetable it until we have admitted everyone because we need to make it fit.

JaffavsCookie · 20/08/2025 20:04

Sorry but it doesn’t sound hopeful at all. Year 12 and year 13 timetables will always differ, so if a year 12 student has double art Monday 1 and 2 it is vanishingly unlikely that they will have double art Monday 1 and 2 in year 13.
It would also be super rare for a timetabler to be removing classes at this juncture, not least as it could count as breaching the rules.
I do hope your dd does get a pass grade.

howdoyoudoyoudoit · 20/08/2025 20:04

Anyway if anyone works in a 6th form college and knows the answer to this I’d love to hear from you, thanks. Sorry I should have put that in the title.

Rest of her timetable is same as last year, sorry.

My timetable is currently the same as last year. It will roll over on the first.

So yours hasn’t changed, but my DD’s has. Today.

Had her timetable changed to yr13 times before and maths was on there but has changed again today? Or was today the first time she saw next year’s timetable?

Timetable changed today.

I know this because I asked her to check it last week as I need to know when I’m dropping her etc for work. Then she logged in this afternoon and maths was gone and she had PPD scheduled into one of her old maths slots. Rest is the same apart from a double lesson has become a single lesson on one day.

OP posts:
howdoyoudoyoudoit · 20/08/2025 20:27

Anyway I should have checked the year 11 thread as according to that schools do get results the day before so question answered.

OP posts:
Wineinthegarden · 20/08/2025 20:31

Well that sounds really positive then!! I would be quietly optimistic as if it is off her timetable then the timetable arranger has been advised of her results and amended it accordingly. However, to be pessimistic it might be there’s been a change in maths staff and some changes are ongoing. I’ll keep my fingers crossed it’s the first option!

Bessica1970 · 20/08/2025 20:40

School get the results the day before but only two or three people in the school (generally head, deputy and exam officer), none of whom will be doing timetabling,
It’s a coincidence I’m afraid.

So today was results download day when the schools and colleges get the results. I would guess she has passed maths and therefore does not need the re-take on her timetable for next year. However there might also be rejigging happened once they have seen how many people need to re-take what so how many classes of each subject they need and what combinations need to work. I guess there is the possibility that they have taken off maths because the class she was in isn't running anymore and they need to move her to another class and therefore move where it is on the time-table.

SoftLass · 20/08/2025 20:48

I do the results processing in the school that I work in, we received them today but the results are strictly embargoed and it's EXTREMELY unlikely that anyone who could make a decision about the timetable would also know about the results today, let alone have time to update it with all the other stuff that needs doing about results today and tomorrow! If
