DD's University course just got cancelled 😫

Hey all, Major upset at home!! My DD had an offer for a degree course she really wanted and yesterday they told her they weren't going ahead with the course....So what on EARTH does she do?! She turned down auditions from the other places she applied to as she had already the place of her dreams. It's far too late UCAS wise to apply anywhere else. How can they do this to someone? Offer her an unconditional place on a degree course and then early May pull the rug out from under her feet?! She has no course now for September. She's devastated understandably, we all are! So my question is what can she do? We are going to approach different universities and explain the situation and ask if there is a chance she can apply and audition late but I can't see what else she can do. Any words of wisdom would be very much appreciated!! It was a dance degree she applied for btw

Oh poor kid. Did they say why?

Your plan sounds good, otherwise I guess she'll have to wait until August and go through clearing? More stressful for her without any certainty.

TheCurious0range · 03/05/2025 09:37

Could she take a gap year? If there's nothing in clearing she wants? Maybe look for dance related work?
I know a friend whose daughter was a dancer at Disney for a year and had a wonderful time

I thibk the sane as this. Ask anyway. Clearing. Year out.

Ive a couple of cousins who have always done theatre and they've also done disney. Or Butlins redcoat seems to be great prep. Not sure when their auditions are though. A redcoat at minehead old me a few years ago that they lose staff as the year progresses as fhey are auditioning for performing roles.

Go to UCAS site and email them for advice. She may be able to go onto the clearing sight early. Get in touch with school/college they should be able to give you advice.

Get her to ring round all the other unis she’s applied to to see if they have any places or a “waiting list”. But she needs to be quick because there are likely to be others who had places on her course in the same position.

Alternatively a gap year may be in order. A year working/volunteering/travel can be good for her application. She may also re evaluate her future. DS took a year out and changed direction completely.

Pinnochiosnose · 03/05/2025 09:52

Thanks all. She's already taken a gap year to work on her dance unfortunately! Taking another one is really something she would like to avoid 😒

Has the university not offered any alternatives? I can only suggest going back to UCAS and getting advice on what happens next. And trying for clearing

So sorry for your daughter

Timble · 03/05/2025 10:10

UCAS extra?

Frostynoman · 03/05/2025 10:13

When my post grad course was pulled they had an option at another local institution lined up - what is the university doing about this?

Seeing as she already has her exam results etc I would crack on by approaching other courses, explaining the situation and asking about applying

PicklesMacGraw · 03/05/2025 10:15

What course and Uni? Or more of a hint if you don’t want to give exact details?

Contact ucas and contact other unis.
in my area when the uni closed a course we received enquiries about our similar one. We considered these applicants.

TiredCatLady · 03/05/2025 10:19

Contact UCAS, contact the course heads at her other uni options and explain the situation. If they’ve previously made her offers then they may not have filled all their places and be willing to offer again.

I’m so sorry - no student deserves this sort of crap.

Pinnochiosnose · 03/05/2025 13:57

Thanks to everyone for your replies. We'll contact all the universities she applied to and more and then also UCAS and the original university to see how they can help. We didn't receive any alternative suggestions from the original university but they may do so when we contact them on Tuesday. How stressful 😫

God, how upsetting for your daughter! I'm so sorry. Yes - she needs to be calling up all the unis she's intetested in with a similar course - prioritising the ones she'd already been offered a place at - and explain her situation. I'd also be sending emails in parallel with that process as it will take a while. If she writes an email, you could help her out by emailing it to all the universities on her list while she works through phone calls in order of preference. If she has no luck within a week, I'd be tempted to also make use of social media - perhaps X - to garner awareness and support. What a rubbish situation for her!

surreygirl1987 · 03/05/2025 16:10

Actually I'd get the emails written and send this weekend. Then at least you have the ball rolling and someone could pick those up early next week. Then I'd follow up with phone calls on Tuesday (in fact, my old uni didn't take back holidays off, so maybe even Monday!) in order of preference. The emails should include a) the situation, b) her exam results and othrr key details etc, and c) why she wants to do the course/ attend that uni.

Agree with this. And name and shame them here so others know not to entrust their students to them

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 03/05/2025 18:31

Courses don’t run frequently. It’s not uncommon.

Scarydinosaurs · 03/05/2025 18:34

This is so upsetting.

Because of the course, is clearing even an option?

Good luck - is her school able to advise

1SillySossij · 03/05/2025 19:09

What a shame she didn't go to the other auditions. Always risky to put all your eggs in one basket.
The trouble is this just won't be just her, it will be everyone who firmed this university course trying to chase down a place elsewhere, when the other unis have probably filled their courses

It's not that common for students to be accepted onto a degree programme and then it is cancelled and certainly not at this stage of the academic year

I’ve known it to happen. And the scrabble for places.

Chrysanthemum5 · 03/05/2025 20:27

Agreed it does happen but usually the university involved goes out of its was to provide solutions to the affected candidates. I hope they have done so in this situation and the OP has maybe not seen it in the panic.

RareGoalsVerge · 03/05/2025 20:34

Don't just wait till clearing. The admissions people at similar courses elsewhere will know full well that this course has just announced it was closing and will know that highly talented people like your daughter will be suddenly at a loose end. They will absolutely want to do whatever they can. Obviously if their courses are full that may be limited but some will have flexibility. The fact that she held an offer from the place that'sclosing is a ready-made endorsement, she may well find something good.
