DD's University course just got cancelled 😫

Hey all, Major upset at home!! My DD had an offer for a degree course she really wanted and yesterday they told her they weren't going ahead with the course....So what on EARTH does she do?! She turned down auditions from the other places she applied to as she had already the place of her dreams. It's far too late UCAS wise to apply anywhere else. How can they do this to someone? Offer her an unconditional place on a degree course and then early May pull the rug out from under her feet?! She has no course now for September. She's devastated understandably, we all are! So my question is what can she do? We are going to approach different universities and explain the situation and ask if there is a chance she can apply and audition late but I can't see what else she can do. Any words of wisdom would be very much appreciated!! It was a dance degree she applied for btw

It's not that common for students to be accepted onto a degree programme and then it is cancelled and certainly not at this stage of the academic year

My employer has just given over 200 people a severance deal and will be going to redundancies to get rid of more. Part of how they are making these staffing cuts is by cancelling modules and even whole degrees. The whole HE sector is in trouble right now.

This might sound like a mad question, but will the university offer compensation? I work for a Russell Group university and am involved in postgrad education. When we have withdrawn programmes in recent years any offer holders are given compensation, I think around £1000 - this is either a financial payment, or as a discount off the fees of an alternative course at the same university if there’s a suitable alternative. I was surprised but apparently they always do this, not sure if this is a postgraduate thing only - but I believe it’s to avoid complaints via the office of students (?). Might be worth looking into, or asking about this?

@Pinnochiosnose Performer's College are still taking applications for a 2025 start, as are London Studio Centre BA (Hons) Professional Dance Performance | London Studio Centre

OP
Lots of universities are accepting applications.

Did your daughter have a second choice? She should contact universities directly to see if they are taking applications. The rest can be sorted via ucas

I’ve known it to happen. And the scrabble for places.

It's very unusual though because not only have the university made offers so there's an agreement in place, they also can't make a whole course team redundant immediately as you have to 'teach out' the students who are currently doing the course for the next 2-3 years. Might be worth contacting the Office for Students to check what your options are.

The first time it happened it was to close to new entrants. They did continue to teach out years 2/3. From what I remember it was post Easter and offers had been made and firmed. We were shocked and just had to deal with the fall out.
