We got an offer from HHGS (Hulme Hall Grammar School) Stockport for year 7 for my DS. Can anyone tell me is HHGS is good school academically and provides good extracurricular activity because the school fee is so high and we need a good suggestion before making decision. Is it worth to spend so much money on grammar school. We also has an offer from state school which has an outstanding ofsted report for year 7. We cant decide yet still confused

I only have a small knowledge of Hulme Hall, as it was one of the possibilities for us if my DC failed their Trafford 11 plus.

They both passed their Trafford 11 plus so we never did any open day visits etc in the end.

It isn’t a ‘Grammar’ school like the Trafford Grammar schools, it is a private school, which has Grammar in the name

My understanding (and others may well be more knowledgable than me ) was that it was less academic than other local private schools eg Stockport Grammar/ Cheadle Hulme/ all the single sex ones.

it is also a very small school (I believe 40 per year) which wouldn’t have suited my oldest well, might have been more suited to my youngest who is about to transition from very small prep school to large Grammar School and is a bit worried about the size difference

I have friends who have children there and they are delighted with it, and when I spoke to the head teacher at a schools fare I was very impressed with him, and the amount of support they offered to the children.

I get the impression that it is a very supportive and nurturing school for children that may need a bit more support than they might get elsewhere, so if that had been our main criteria we would have considered it above the other local private schools, if we have been looking for a private school that focused on academics/ sporting options etc we would have looked at some of the other local options ahead of it (things like school swimming pools/ climbing walls etc would have featured high on our list)

but the above is only gleaned from speaking to friends who have children at most of the local private and Grammar Schools, and speaking to the schools representatives at schools fares etc.

i imagine you would get a lot more information from the schools website re extracurricular activities/ academics and be able to compare that to the allocated state school information on those two points, but speaking to parents with children at each would also be useful.

I have no direct experience but I do know of the school and it has a good reputation
However, I would say that if you have a good state option that you think would suit your child then there is probably no need to go Private.
I say that as a Private school parent as well.
