VAT on after school clubs (state + private)

bravefox · 30/11/2024 09:25

We have two kids, one in private, one state.

Private school has just done booking for after school clubs next term. I've had to pay 20% VAT on these.

State school does club booking next week. Will these be subject to VAT too?

Seems a bit weird that one is VAT-able and the other might not be. Some of the clubs are even worth the same provider!

Private school after school clubs are VAT exempt.

Really?

Well, not paid yet, but said it would be added to Spring bill + vat. That's good news if I've got it wrong

It depends if it's extra curricular or childcare

twistyizzy · 30/11/2024 09:38

Any 'educational' activity held at private school will be subject to VAT even if kids are at state school

bravefox · 30/11/2024 09:41

I guess ican understand if it's the school putting on co curricular club themselves, but one is literally the same outside dance class providing a 45 minutes session in both locations.

It doesn't matter! This was always going to be the impact of this policy.

I think if the private school pays tge dance clubs invoice direct and collect tje money aa part of thier own fees invoice it will be subject to vat.

I think (and this is a thjnk) if the dance club invoices you direct the vat situation is different.

Sandsnake · 30/11/2024 09:49

That seems very unfair. I wonder if it’s to avoid schools trying to find loopholes and characterising parts of the school day as after school care?

Then it isn’t childcare.

I know, but put shoe on the other foot. Why doesn't the state primary have to put vat on the (identical) dance lessons when the private school does? Neither is a 'main' school activity, or indeed childcare

It’s not my job to justifiy the law. I’m just explaining it because you seem to be unable to google it or perhaps you just wanted to complain because it feels unjust to you?

In most state schools you pay the provider direct for this kind of service so you pay VAT too.

LittleBearPad · 30/11/2024 10:52

State schools don’t take the money for after school activity clubs generally.

Because Labour don’t care. They aren’t interested in anyone who has kids at a private school. And there’s no getting round that attitude.

Individual music lessons from visiting music teachers at private schools are subject to VAT. The same teacher will give lessons out of school (in their home or whatever) for the price without VAT.

Lots of implications from this policy of spite. Glad my kids are too old to need school/childcare etc.

That's not correct, many run the clubs themselves. Our state primary did, with existing staff

Did they charge for those? Our primary never charged for after school clubs so there’s obviously no VAT to pay.

If a private business came in to run them, I would expect to pay, and for there to be VAT applied.

The childcare clubs they often run themselves. The football or dance or gymnastics clubs are usually outsourced.

Yes they did charge. State school

Vat only applies if you are above the vat threshold, so the state primary (if it invoices direct for an outsourced dance provider) would unlikely be above the vat threshold. If the dance provider themselves invoices it depends on their vat status.

I feel if the private school is invoicing for the dance lesson, it depends on thjer vat status. I'm not sure what happens if the dance school invoices you direct at a private school.

Put it in the education not taxation Facebook page and you will get an answer.
