Government’s private schools VAT raid ‘could cost taxpayer £1.8bn’

Parents who are forced out of sector are likely to work less or even quit jobs, according to think tank research.

@dontjudgemeagain DS started private school this week. Age 10 and the first thing he seemed really excited about were the number of nationalities in his new class. Reeled them off telling me facts about them all. His new best friend is a Ukrainian boy. His state school primary class was 100% white.

So if there are lots of lower paid jobs becoming available that might reduce the unemployment rate. I don't think the government will care too much who does the job. Do make sure you factor in parental contribution to university fees in a few years. It can be challenging getting a job with a career break.

Alternatively paying more into a pension is an excellent idea for you and the government as it will mean you are less likely to need benefits when older and might still be contributing tax.

It sounds like the change is giving you a chance to re-evaluate and decide what is important for you. I know my dc have benefited from their state education and hopefully yours will too

Why would they be lower paid jobs? I’m a highly skilled professional and many of my female contempories made a choice between not working or working and paying for private school. This policy will now factor into the decision making of those who are having children now.

@twistyizzy I'd like to say I've got your back on this and hope this ridiculous, pointless and spiteful movement does not work out and your offspring gets to stay in their school. I find it amusing that so many people comment on a forum they do not really belong on nor understand. It's almost like it's their way of belonging to an exclusive club they aren't able to join..... xxx

twistyizzy · 31/08/2024 21:14

Kent LA doesn't have enough state SEN places so spends £84 million sending SEN kids to indy sector. Will the government then tax the taxpayer 20% on those fees? This is just an example from 1 LA, there are countless more:

twistyizzy · 31/08/2024 20:18

And all of those have risen for us too! We don't live in a bubble whereby CoL didn't impact us

Your rent has gone up, too?

Perfect28 · 31/08/2024 21:17

@twistyizzy they have already said there will be vat exemptions for councils paying the fees?

twistyizzy · 31/08/2024 21:19

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/08/2024 21:16

Your rent has gone up, too?

Mortgage has yes. Same as for everyone else in the country our bills have gone up. So an extra 20% on fees is a tipping point because they haven't happened in isolation.

Brighton2025 · 31/08/2024 21:19

@NeverDropYourMooncup you should try buying a property instead of renting?

Sdpbody · 31/08/2024 21:20

If we take our children out of school then I will give up work. My whole salary goes on school fees.

Perfect28 · 31/08/2024 21:21

@Dibblydoodahdah I think it's sad you are excited about paying less tax. The fact that you actually celebrate contributing less towards society and others more in need than yourself. What a lovely example you set.

No, it doesn't look like they will. The council funded places are exempt.

Perfect28 · 31/08/2024 21:23

@Sdpbody how sad. Do you not work to give yourself a challenge? Some identity outside of parenting? Some independence? To role model working? Because your labour can help someone else? Because your work can make a difference?

Behave yourself.

Dont even try to blame the poster doing what’s right for them and their family.

Get off the moral high ground - you dont belong there.

They have already said LA will claim the VAT back. The issue is sen pupils in independent specialist where parents are paying during legal process with LA to name an appropriate school. 12 month delay in tribunal process.

Perfect28 · 31/08/2024 21:25

@EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime every parent wants the best for their family, not just the 'rich'.

Tear down the private schools, there's no place for them in a fair society.

ZebraF · 31/08/2024 21:26

I have over 20 years experience in my specialist clinical nhs role. I will continue in my current job while we need the money for school fees but once DC are in state school I will walk away. There is no incentive to continue in a demanding, stressful job if we have been priced out of the school which best suits our DC’s needs. The nhs will struggle to find a replacement for my skills and experience.

CeruleanBelt · 31/08/2024 21:26

Even if your op was true, which its not:

It's still worth it.

Wrong! Fair = enabling everyone child to reach their potential. That means acknowledging that 1 size fits all doesn't work for many kids. Equality of opportunity doesn't mean shoehorning all kids into state. It means funding state correctly so that every child has access to a good education. However it is quicker and easier to blame indy schools for the failing of state

I suggest to go post those sentiments on any thread where someone considers whether they should be a SAHP. I mean these parents also seem to want to put their family first over the greater good of society. Is it only higher earners that should put paying their taxes before their children?

Brighton2025 · 31/08/2024 21:31

@Perfect28 your bitterness is so transparent. Are you so bored on a Saturday evening to trawl a forum for subjects you aren't directly involved in?

hulkincredible · 31/08/2024 21:31

7% of children go to private schools.
Not all of those will leave.

Some perspective please. I don’t agree with the VAT on private schools btw but this regular fuss and bizarre claims are getting boring.

@twistyizzy again, everyone wants their child to go to a good school. At no point did I blame the 'indy' sector for state school 'failures'. They simply shouldn't be an option.

People with any sense of moral dignity should be proud to pay taxes.

Sdpbody · 31/08/2024 21:33

@Perfect28 , I will 100% be fine with going to the gym and going to lunch. We can give up our cleaner as I can do it all. I can drop my children to school and collect them every day. I can take my children to the earlier gymnastic classes and change swimming to one evening so it frees up our weekend.

I can be with them all over the holidays instead of paying £38 per child per day for 8 weeks.
