You can't change the rules during a game

A lot of talk about VAT on private school fees. My view is that it's unfair to change the rules while a child in in school.

Imagine if you where taking a flight and during the flight the pilot can on the speaker saying the price has increased and you need to pay 20% more before we land otherwise you'll won't be able to enter the country.

This VAT change should only be done to new school entrants, not existing children.

@twistyizzy How much more offensive can you be?

"What I haven't seen from state parents in my area is a coordinated movement to lobby the previous government to raise funding and standards. Maybe such a group exists but I just haven't known about it.
So don't tar us all with the same brush just because we have chose indi.

What this policy has shown is that indi parents have been effective in raising the issue and bringing it into the public space. Maybe when you pay for something you are more motivated to protect it?"

I know our state primary never requested money. There has never been anything stopping parents who can afford it to contribute to schools.
I agree it is appalling that state schools are so poorly funded. As a minimum it should be 10K per pupil. That's why there should be parent lobby groups in the state sector to fight for better funding etc.

Sorry if you found it offensive. I find it offensive when posters swear at me just because I chose indi school for my child.
Maybe it got lost in translation but I support state schools and I work in FE so I see the impact every day.

Is the best you can come up with? Totally different country at a completely different stage of development and different demographics. Very few parallels but it gets trotted out time and again…and again.

Well if you work in a state school, you should have a bit more perspective. No excuse.

I "trotted it out" because a PP said Greece taxed education. I was pointing out that they are wrong

It is trotted out everywhere just like all the (spurious) claims about Starmer’s parents choosing private education for him when they didn’t. And by the way, it’s indie if you really must use that term.

@PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister @DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace

Not the same thing though is it. Parents are told in the T&Cs that fees will increase based on xyz.

Tax being applied isn't fee increase. It's a tax.

I'd be surprised if the T&Cs of private schools in any way restricted their ability to put by fees by as much as they wanted to, if it came to it.

And there is definitely nothing in society that means people should expect the tax situation to stay the same.

I've already said upthread that you can make several reasonable arguments against this policy. I just don't think this is one of them.

Oh fgs they are reporting an actual event. It was the quickest report I could find but I have the full report saved somewhere. Just because something is written in the Telegraph doesn't mean it isn't true! Fundamentally Greece tried, and failed, to tax private education

Well maybe while you are looking for sources, you might find the one you claim you have saying Starmer's parents knew in advance that his school was being switched from state grammar to private. No? Didn't think so.
