And will it make a difference?

My boys' primary is going to be closed as there are a lot of NUT members there.

I don't know about the secondary where I work yet. It's possible we might have just yr9 and 11s in.

But we have lots of staff with children, who don't have a great track record for managing their childcare arrangements. So if the primary schools are off, I think they will want to be off too to look after their children.

fizzbuzz · 08/04/2008 18:53

But Roisin, NASUWT staff are not supposed to cover any lessons from striking NUT colleagues, so how can just Y9 and Y11 come in ? Unless your school has millions of cover supervisors, or very few staff in NUT. We have 25 in our school, with a staff of about 110, so not sure all those classes can be covered

roisin · 08/04/2008 20:43

Well, I don't know if they'll be able to do it or not. But they were actually planning that day for yr9s to be off timetable and to have workshops in Maths and English, which I guess could possibly go ahead.

I'm a CS, and am in ATL - along with other CS at our school. I'm happy to cover for staff who are off that day because they're on a course or off sick, but I won't cover for striking teachers.

Fizzbuzz - agree sentiments on the pay deal, especially in the current financial dilema and potential meltdown (WallStreet???? Again????)

NASUWT here, so can't directly go on strike, may need to go over to the NUTters if my union keeps letting poor deals like this through though!

fizzbuzz · 08/04/2008 21:28

Yes, I'm not very impressed either, BUT they did ballot all members and this is what majority of members agree with, although it was an incredibly low response apparently

NAS rep in our school was not very impressed either

Me

Rats, have literally JUST got back from MAT leave, so probably missed the poll - didn't hear about that one anyway...

belgianbun "You don't get paid if you strike - I think that's how it should be!"

The only problem there is that the financial issues start to take precedence over the moral issues. DW's decision about whether or not to follow the strike will, ultimately, be guided by whether she can afford to lose a day's pay. And that's not how it should be.

Cammelia · 17/04/2008 22:15

UQD of course people can't be paid if they strike, in any sphere of work.

I'm striking. TBH I think if you're in the union you should strike, or choose another union. Really, unions don't work unless everyone in them pulls together. And the money we're losing over the long term through having pay rises of less than the rate of inflation is more than one day's pay comes to.

janeite · 17/04/2008 22:28

I'm NASUWT but wouldn't strike anyway. Until all the unions get their acts together and start agreeing on things,or even joining together, I think it's hard to get any real sense of what teachers really think/feel. And so few of the NUT members actually even bothered voting for strike action that I think that says a lot in itself. We'll be open; only two staff striking. My daughter's school is closing for two days though, which is a real pain.

2 days? I thought the strike was agreed for 1. Your daughters school is taking the pee.

ravenAK · 17/04/2008 23:38

I'm a NASty but thinking of changing my loyalties to the NUTters because my lot are being so wet over this. (But on ML so biding my time anyway).

janeite · 18/04/2008 17:43

2 days - one for Unison, one for NUT I think.
