Missed the best time to apply for sixth form 2024 entry. Due to family relocation, DD need to get a school for year 12. Wonder if any good and nurture private school can try ? Prefer girls' school, but prehaps I don't have much say in it.
DD is good in academic, well behaved

Where do you live?

SausageCasseroles · 03/01/2024 04:27

Where abouts? Hampshire has some good state 6th forms. But it depends exactly where you are!

Netaporter · 03/01/2024 04:37

@roka, can you tell us which schools you were looking at where you have missed the deadline so we can see what type of school you are interested in and help you?

You are most likely to have missed the deadline for the most competitive schools (both state and independent) but all is not lost. Do you want a day school or boarding?

mondaytosunday · 03/01/2024 06:19

Private schools can be flexible - you need to ring up the schools individually. When I was enquiring about a competitive independent London girls school, the admissions woman initially misheard me and though I was enquiring about the (then) current cycle, not the next one. She didn't say 'oh you've missed the deadline', but asked what GCSEs she had predicted. Money talks and if a stellar student I got the feeling she'd have been admitted for that year. Not true everywhere of course but worth a try - but be sensible, if a very selective school they are going to want excellent grades. If not so selective even better chance.

We are thinking live in East / Southern east of England. Hamshire, Sussex Essex and Kent are possible options.. Final location would depend on the school location of DD.
We plan to aim for private school as she doesnt have GCSE result. She is academic and love art
We target day school with small group teaching, nurturing environment with loving and experienced teachers

Ah you can live anywhere?! What about work?

Peter symonds in Winchester is very good. State but takes from private sector too.

You may well want private though for more tailored support. Good luck.

tennissquare · 03/01/2024 07:38

You have 2 options:

  1. you find somewhere to live and then apply to a state sixth form college or school with a sixth form linked to the postcode of the address.
  2. you apply to a private school that will take international students such as ACS Cobham. (It's very very expensive). GCSE's are often a stepping stone to A levels, ie you learn the basics of the syllabus in GCSEs so you may want to consider a school that offers IB rather than A levels.

Please note that you need to have lived in the U.K. for 3 continuous years to be eligible for U.K. home fees at university so also check out the cost of uni international fees,

Winchester is lovely. I'd move there in a heartbeat!

Netaporter · 03/01/2024 08:00

I’d consider one of the private sixth form colleges in London who have small teaching groups and no equivalent GCSE entry requirements assuming that your DD doesn’t have any? Does your DD have any special talents or interests? That’ll also make a difference to what we can recommend on here.

tennissquare · 03/01/2024 08:00

I think Peter Symonds has closed for 2024 entry and you would need a uk postcode to be able to apply. You might do better with a school as the sixth forms take later applications as they are not always full but again you need a postcode.
If you want a state option focus on finding a home in an area like twickenham that is in the catchment for sixth form colleges and schools with sixth forms that are not full at the start of A levels, ie Kingston Academy / Greycourt school. Check the Admissions policy on the websites for applicants without GCSEs.

Otherwise concentrate on private or international schools but be aware of the university issue.

Frensham Heights, Surrey

TheSquareMile · 03/01/2024 09:20

Which country do you live in at the moment?

Which exams will your daughter be taking before beginning Sixth Form?

Which A Levels is she interested in?

I was wondering too about where you would be moving to.

Which factors will you need to take into account with your move? You might want to move in to an area where you already have family or friends, for instance.

London could be a choice for us, if we can locate a school matching my DD. Yes, she doesnt have any certificate or GCSE. Her age should join year 12, some suggested to join iGCSE and some proposed to year 12, such a delimma already.
She likes design and art, she helped school club design club logo and memo paper design stuff etc. She loves it. She also loves to have indepth understanding on her studying subjects, biology chem. She is super talent in MATH, too
What should be my direction to find a matching school for her?
Thanks all

Yes, I think private school may be a safer option to secure a school place and ready everything before arrival
May I know the possible issue for studying A level in private school related to university ?

Do you understand how English education works for 16-18?

Generally you will do either A levels (3 or 4 subjects) or the IB.

Given your DD seems to have wide interests, you might be better to work backwards here.

What is the end goal? Is your DD wanting to go to university to study a particular subject? What are her career ambitions? Is she a high flier academically or more middle of the road?

The issue isn't with the schools. The issue is that in order to qualify for domestic fees for university, your DD will need to have been resident in the UK for three years.

A level courses are only 2 years, so you will be a year short and likely facing international fees for university.

We are in Hong Kong currently, DD is preparing DSE but can't wait till she done the exam before we move. We think A level is in the way more similar to DSE and may have less changes impact on her. She's already half way in the DSE prepartion and study.
I know many Hong Kongers moved to Manhantan, birmingham, midlands. We considered to join the big group, but we more prefer warmer and sunny place, so later we considering more on East / Southern east of England. Not sure if it is correct line of though

Do you want her to start a levels in sep 2024 here? How old is she and when is her birthday?

TheSquareMile · 03/01/2024 10:11

Can I check whether you are looking at boarding as a possibility or just days?

Would a school with an affiliation to a particular faith be something for you or is that not something you would wish to take into consideration?

Not sure you're going to get much warmer and sunnier looking out of the window here in the SE! It's raining... again...

What subjects would she be looking to take for A level?

Winchester is a lovely small city - but not an awful lot to do for teenagers (I lived there for a few years in my 20s). Has very nice shops, is safe and close to beautiful countryside. But also very expensive!

Has Peter Symonds which is one of the best 6th forms in the country. But very few other options for 6th form.
