Missed the best time to apply for sixth form 2024 entry. Due to family relocation, DD need to get a school for year 12. Wonder if any good and nurture private school can try ? Prefer girls' school, but prehaps I don't have much say in it.
DD is good in academic, well behaved

Frensham Heights, Surrey

I just checked Frensham Heights. Although academic result is not very strong, but seems its a very special school. Location good too.
May I have your view or experience on this school more? Are you living around and leanrt about this school or have studied there?
Thanks

I wouldn't rule out state schools. My daughter is currently at a state school studying A-levels. She didn't study GCSEs last year but has an alternative equivalent qualification. We only started to apply for a 6th form place around April/May last year - we applied to 3 excellent schools and had offers from 2. We were looking at state boarding schools as she liked the idea of boarding for 6th form and we found them more flexible with the alternative qualification as they are used to accepting students from different education systems.

Private schools can be more flexible - does she have any qualification from abroad? this is so specific, with you being late and no GCSEs, that no-one can give you an answer here and you'll have to ring individual schools.

Peter Symonds will accept late applications - they are well used to dealing with overseas applications as they take boarders from all over the place.

@Noka with the greatest will in the world, no one on here can recommend any school because we do not know what standard your daughter is at. And you seem to want very academic schools but I’m afraid you will find that the sept 2024 intake for these schools has already been fixed. I doubt you would be able to get a 6th form place at CLC at this point in time. My DC are at school with plenty of kids from HK but they are very bright and the books for their 6th form closed before Xmas. Winchester col is for bright girls but there have only been two female cohorts to date and their deadline has closed. Academic admissions do depend on birthdates. On or after 1st September is the eldest child admitted and 31st August the youngest for an English school year. Unless you advise us of where you were looking that prompted this posts, we cannot narrow it down for you. There are many, many options for school in the UK. A bright child will do well in any of them.

Bede near eastbourne, st james girls in London, LVS in Ascot, Claires Court in Maidenhead, Ewell castle nr Kingston? sibford banbury, Leighton park reading..All private schools with good caring reputation .. there is a big hk community around Kingston/Sutton if that's important...

It's a good option for more artistic and free-spirited kids (no uniform, first names with teachers, lots of rich hippy parents). But the sixth form is small with very limited A-level options and they lose a lot of kids to the surrounding (excellent) state sixth form colleges such as the aforementioned Peter Symonds, Farnborough, and Godalming. It's extremely common for children in this area (Surrey/W. Sussex/Hants borders) to go private for secondary and then state for sixth form.

I would stick with the HK community in the U.K., your dd maybe more diligent and hard working than a normal pupil studying in year 11 currently and she may find the transition easier to be with like minded friends. The weather isn't that different across the U.K.

TheSquareMile · 03/01/2024 12:50

Have you approached any schools already, OP?

Knowing which ones you had in mind might help other posters to point you in the right direction.

LIZS · 03/01/2024 13:08

If she wants to pursue art and design there are specific colleges for it even at sixth form age but they may not offer other academic subjects. Hurtwood House might be worth considering.

A further education college may be more diverse and accommodating but also less intensive a system than she maybe used to. Tbh there is little difference in climate between Birmingham and Kent so do not base location on that.

tennissquare · 03/01/2024 16:57

OP, I would start with Hurtwood House and ACS Cobham which are both over £30k per year for a day place and will both have space for your dd. If they seem not academic enough and / or too expensive then decide where you want to live (ideally with a HK community) and contact local private schools to see what they say about 6th form admission.
If you choose a "second tier" boarding school outside London that also has day places in the 6th form you will probably find they are quite accommodating and use to the HK educational system so can advise you on A level selection.

Roedean might be worth a look if you want south coast (Brighton) - big HK contingent and has both day and boarding.

Noka · 04/01/2024 10:48

Thank you all suggestions and input. I have tried to contact the schools recommended. Some responded full while some consider to process as waitlist or application. Really thanks all for the sharing which really fruitful and inspired me

Most of the so called top schools (in terms of ranking I guess) would have completed their 16+ entry in November and December and offers given.

You haven't indicated if you prefer a co-ed or a girls only school.

There are however still many schools you can try. A couple of girls school that come to mind and with a big Hong Kong/China contingent might be Queen's Anne in Reading, Headington in Oxford, Roedean in Brighton. They might be more flexible with admission timeline and familiar with your DD's education background. Just a thought.
