Most definitely challenge that, reasoning is a combined score and by far the trickiest of the three. Stand your ground, you've both had a lot to deal with. In the grand scheme of things he's done amazing! Get the headteachers backing and you'll get through on appeal.

I think this is unlikely actually. The only people I know who have got through on appeal are those who eg missed by a couple of marks in one subject, but were well over the pass mark in total. Eg getting 115 English, 120 reasoning and 105 maths. Just as an example. I think the reasoning scores for this poster's child are too low to give this kind of advice

I disagree. I know of people with comparable scores having successful appeals. Additionally this is individual has extenuating circumstances they can explain.
I wonder about your motivation in posting this reply to this mum, very unkind. She has every right to appeal and of course there are no guarantees of success but your view to her at this stage is only likely to cause her negative emotions. This mother has clearly been through a rough time recently so the last thing she needed was you making that comment.

I know someone who has sat on the appeals panel for a grammar school, and they found that context was very important when considering appeals. It's definitely worth appealing. Can you work with your head teacher to help them make the strongest case? Be sure they know that your son had no tutoring and had difficult circumstances over the summer. Good luck.

I met with the headteacher on Thursday afternoon and he didn’t think twice about supporting an appeal. The fact that my son had passed the Maths and English is promising. He possibly fell short on the Reasoning paper because he hadn’t had enough practice of the questioning format. He’d had 3 teachers in year 5 at his old school as well, which wasn’t ideal. Obviously it will be down to the appeal panel on the day, but with the headteacher’s support, there is definitely hope 😊

Definitely worth an appeal because Maidstone usually has spare grammar school places after allocations unlike some other areas of Kent. Putting a good appeal together for the panel is important but so is the school having spare places. Often OPGS has spare places which are filled by appeals so it is a case of keeping fingers crossed and hoping for a sympathetic panel and enough spare places for your son (and any other appeallants whose case may be stronger). I wish you the best of luck.

I met a parent dong a tour of our local oversubscribed grammar school Friday who's DC was 28 points short and adamant she was appealing - headteacher has already said he won't support which I'm not surprised about. She practically bit my head off when I mentioned my own DC overall score (she did ask). I find those sort of parents pushing for appeals a little off the mark!! In your case @alic73 with the headteachers support you have a much better chance and far more deserving. I wish you luck getting through the appeal.

Thank you, you lovely ladies who wish my son and I the best. If I didn’t think my son was capable, I certainly wouldn’t be pursuing this. I’m pretty sure the headteacher would have told me so too. He is the youngest of my four. My eldest daughter passed back in 2003 and my middle two didn’t take the test as I knew they wouldn’t cope at a grammar. Well done to all of the children that took the test/s this year, they’re not easy and may they all do well at whatever school they go to 😊

My DD didn't pass the test...only scored 104 in her maths and passed the rest. She was absolutely fine about the result and has asked me not to appeal. It took me so much emergy to get her to do any preparation for the test, she didn't care where she went. This has all made me realise that the grammar isn't for her and she would do such better being near the top of the class than being nearer the bottom at a grammar.
We all know what is best for our child @alic73 and if you think grammar is the place for your son, then you should definitely appeal.
