GCSE Predicted Grade

LoveHK · 01/07/2023 11:04

My son is in Year 10, just received a report card. There is a predicted grade, I believed that it is the predicted grade in school.

How does this predicted grade relate to the GCSE predicted grade? Similar, lower or higher?

Thank youSmile

As with everyone above it depends on the school and how they present grades. I have had 2 children go through GCSEs and this is how it went for them, just like unexpected Ds1 had his grades based on KS2 SATs, so for him that would have meant a 4/5 in English Lang and a 6 in Maths. He takes statistics as an option, aces that end of year exam in year 9, they move him up a maths set as his statistics knowledge also helps with the maths papers. He gets a new teacher who fills him with confidence, as do the others and he starts to believe it. He gets 9s all the way through the latter half of year 10 in maths but the system does not allow them to go up more than one grade so the computer says 7 his teacher who is also SLT tells us in person, a 9. In the end he gets a high 9 in maths and a bloody 8 in English Lang.

Ds2 is doing great, pretty much 8s and 9s across the board except in English. He gets a low 5 in year 11 November mocks, his teacher, amazing, tells me exactly what he needs, Ds2 and I work on that at home, he puts time and effort in with me. He gets an 8 for Lit and a 7 (his only 7) in Lang. So they can predict all they want, it comes down to the child and how they compare to the rest of the entire cohort all sitting the same exam. To quote Ds1's stats teacher, it doesn't matter what mark he gets, he just has to do better than a lot of other students. The grade boundaries move every year to reflect the ability of the cohort.

Both mine sat end of year 10 exams and year 11 mocks in both November and January where the predicted grade is refined. It should never really be low but again it depends on the school and whether they use it as a motivator or a child might have been performing at a lower level and gets an exam on the topic he has revised on meaning his grade is great, but another question might reduce his grade down. This is why past papers, learning from the papers they have already sat etc makes a difference to outcomes.

I used to hate all this target, predicted, expected - nonsense!
