Can anyone remember a grace which starts "Thank you for the world so sweet, thank you for the food we eat..." or something similar. DS and DD can't remember it all and have been asked to say grace at a grandparent's birthday party. Any other simple ideas appreciated.

It carries on

"Thank you for the birds that sing
Thank you Lord for everything
Amen"

At school we used to chant the following before every meal. I'm not sure we were supposed to be chanting, but that is what 200 girls who had learned something by rote and were paying no attention to the words sounded like when they were reciting it.

Bless us oh Lord
And these thy gifts which from thy bounty we are about to receive
Through Christ our Lord
Amen

There was another one for after the meal but I can't remember it.

Stand on the chairs with arms aloft in Superman pose and to the theme of Superman sing:

Thank you Lord for giving us food
Thank you Lord for giving us food
For giving us bre-ad
When we need to be fe-d
Thank you Lord

Might not be quite right for a gp's party

Tamum · 03/01/2008 09:32

Oh, I remember that- it goes on "thank you for the birds that sing, thank you God for everything". I have no idea what deep recesses of my mind I dragged that up from, but there you go

Demandingmoremakoto · 03/01/2008 09:37

Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you God for everything. Amen.

God our Father, God our Father,
Who gives all, who gives all,
Thank you for this dinner, Thank you for this dinner,
Amen. Amen.
(to the tune of Frere Jacques)

When I was a child this one was used at church meals
Lord, Bless this bunch, while we much our lunch. Amen.
I got the prayers from this site here www.prayerguide.org.uk/dinnerprayers.htm

The lord is good to me, and so I thank the lord,
For giving me the food I need,
The sun, the rain and the appleseed,
The lord is good to me.

throckenholt · 03/01/2008 09:58

we always used to say

for what we are about to receive may the lord make us truly thankful.

ChippyMinton · 03/01/2008 10:00

Bless us oh Lord as we sit together
Bless the food we eat today
Bless the hands that made the food
Bless us oh Lord
Amen

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 03/01/2008 10:01

and another

Father bless the food we take and bless us all for Jesus sake, Amen

kindersurprise · 03/01/2008 10:03

I like the Selkirk grace, but it is probably a bit difficult for non-Scots.

Selkirk Grace

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.

And the "translation"

Selkirk Grace

Some have meat and cannot eat,
Some cannot eat that want it;
But we have meat and we can eat,
So let the Lord be thankit.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 03/01/2008 10:04

they could of corse write their own which would be nice

flamingtoaster · 03/01/2008 10:13

The simplest one we know is:

"For good food and good friends, thank God."

Also:

"For health and food, for love and friends.
For everything thy goodness sends,
Father, in heaven, we thank thee."

Donk · 03/01/2008 10:21

Us and this, Lord bless, Amen

Janni · 03/01/2008 10:41

For health and strength and daily bread we praise thy name, oh Lord

NewYearBiggy · 03/01/2008 10:53

The local vicar when I was growing up favoured:

"Heavenly Pa, Ta."

whenachildisbob · 03/01/2008 10:56

To the tune of "rock around the clock", with mandatory finger clicking:

God is great
God is good
And we thank Him for our food
We're gonna thank him morning, noon and night
We're gonna thank you Lord with all our might
Amen Amen Amen Amen amen.

Slouchy · 03/01/2008 10:56

Rub a dub dub
Thanks God, for this grub.

catesmum · 03/01/2008 10:58

we've used:

bless this bunch as they munch their lunch....

fembear · 03/01/2008 11:22

I like DS's school's Grace but cannot remember the exact wording. It is along the lines of flamingtoaste's where you give thanks for the company and well as the food.

2happy · 03/01/2008 11:26

Not exactly religious, but we like

Here's tae us and wha's like us?
Damn few, and they're a' deid!

Reallytired · 03/01/2008 13:22

SSSandy2 · 03/01/2008 14:54

Like Throckenholt, we say: for what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful.

Good to see some other variants though. I'd totally forgotten that one Maggie with thank you for the world so sweet...

SpottyHamster · 03/01/2008 16:07

At junoirs we had this one:
For what we are about to recieve may the Lord make us truly thankful. Amen

The horrid girl always used to thump me at that point & thought it v funny, I didn't.

SpottyHamster · 03/01/2008 16:09

The horrid girl sitting next to me I should have said.
