apparently Well it looks like we are going to have a reputation as paupers in the school and we are only in the nursery class so far.

At least its given me a kick up the arse to sort out her xmas play costume. dd and I had a great time sorting through my 'treasure chest' for stuff and making it this weekend. Did I put an extra effort in? Too bloody right I did. Its a work of art so it is. Competative mum moi??

TG dp does the school run most days

our school asks for homemade, doesn't like the shop bought ones! I am a bit rubbish at making but i like to give it a go. not poor at all, very lucky IMO.

paulaplumpbottom · 03/12/2007 11:34

Thats n6t tr4e at all. Us smug mommys have to make them ourselves

LadyMuck · 03/12/2007 11:36

The dcs school make the costumes. They don't trust us parents to do a good enough job!

snowleopard · 03/12/2007 11:37

Who says tarantula??? I love making costumes too and will insist on doing it for as long as I can get away with it, even my DS does want a tacky spiderman one from sainsbos or whatever. I made him a monkey outfit at his request for halloween and it was a hit - he's only 2 though and hasn't spotted the shop ones yet.

IMO making it, esp if they help, is much much better because they learn to make stuff and also learn that there's more to life than just splashing some more cash every time you want something.

contentiouscat · 03/12/2007 11:37

What rubbish - if you have the time and the ability then good on you.

I dont think buying a highly flammable £10 costume (probably made by 7 yeard olds in China) from ebay or Tesco makes someone any richer, just proves they are a moron if they think it does.

contentiouscat · 03/12/2007 11:38

Id buy one from Tesco though - struggle to even thread a sewing machine

cazzybabs · 03/12/2007 11:39

I would love to make my dd one...but I lack the talent! So I will have to buy one (unless you can rustle one up in the next 6 hours )

wilbur · 03/12/2007 11:43

Surely couture always outranks pret-a-porter?

I like making things because it's fun to adapt stuff. Dd was very pleased with the addition of a glittery headband for her teatowel as she has felt the shepherd role to be a little less glam than she would have liked (I'd already had to explain that Angelina Ballerina was not present at the birth of Baby Jesus).

So say the mums at the school gate. the oracles of all wisdom.

Granted if you are busy parents or just not into make and do then grand, cant see a problem with buying something but the whole 'POOR' argument left me totally gobsmacked.

The Jessie costume looks fab hatrick.

I had to buy one this time, we got less that a weekd notice that DS was to be a camel, and I had no chance of getting out to get materials. I am really worried people will think i have gione over the tiop, but no option this time. In the past though, I have made a Hairy Maclaray outfit!

Raggydoll · 03/12/2007 12:26

They will secretly be jealous of the family time/creativeness spent .

I am a home made costume virgin and I have to make 2 snowmen costumes by 18/12 - any ideas ??

snowleopard · 03/12/2007 12:28

That's outrageous! a) judging you to be poor if you are creative, and b) making remarks about being poor in the first place - it's not as if people can help being poor, nor is it some kind of moral failure

I would want to tell them they are poor in imagination, spirit and creativity.

Hulababy · 03/12/2007 12:29

In DD's school only those with creative mums have the homemade costumes. Most of us have bought ones as it is so much easier to sort out! However if I had the skills - and depending on the costume needed - then yes, DD would have a homemade costume.

MerryAnnSinglemas · 03/12/2007 12:32

ds is now in yr 6, so touch wood I have made my last costume - I've done Greek, Roman,Victorian,50s and Evacuee - and dressed him as a fur clad lost boy in Peter Pan - enough already !

annh · 03/12/2007 16:42

Hmmm, in our school I rather suspect it is the bought costumes which are looked down on. Not entirely sure as I am have no desire to get involved in the school gate politics and as I work, I am also one of the mums prone to buying stuff when time is short. So it's the complete opposite with us.

Chopster · 03/12/2007 16:45

Oh you can't win whatever you do.

I tore up a bed sheet to make a dishdasha (sp?) for ds1 on geography day and got a parent snorting at me saying 'I wouldn't waste a good sheet for one day'.

But they did talk about how brilliant my ripped sheet was in the staffroom and the head came up to me at the end of the school day.

bossykate · 03/12/2007 16:49

at dd's nursery and ds's school it is rather the reverse. home-made = yummymummy.

madness · 03/12/2007 16:52

well, dd in nursery gets a quick homemade as don't want to spend to much, she doesn't really realise it. ds gets a bought one, quickest, dd1 gets a home made because can't find it in the shop. Hate it though as not very good in it an worried about qhat the other children will have and that dd will be disappointed...

DynamicKermitsNanny · 03/12/2007 17:39

Hat-trick love the Jessie outfit - sooo cute

I think we should see pictures of the children wearing their unique costumes

MaLopez · 06/12/2007 18:07

Never listen to mum at school gates!

I would be jealous of homemade costumeas as I can't sew to save my life so would buy from out the way shop and embellish it so it looks homemade.

Oh bliss, I have this to look forward to come next September.

Clary · 07/12/2007 00:08

oh well then we are kings of poor.

DS2's costume for Angel Gabriel is DD's home-made Whoops-a-Daisy Angel robe from 2 years ago givena good wash! (she's a messy tyke that W-aD!)

And DS1 who needed white trousers (see other thread) has got an old sheet made into kind of white joggers. Didn't really have many other options once white leggins (MN suggestion) vetoed by DH.
