apparently Well it looks like we are going to have a reputation as paupers in the school and we are only in the nursery class so far.

At least its given me a kick up the arse to sort out her xmas play costume. dd and I had a great time sorting through my 'treasure chest' for stuff and making it this weekend. Did I put an extra effort in? Too bloody right I did. Its a work of art so it is. Competative mum moi??

TG dp does the school run most days

i really hope it is the other way round and only us talented creative parents are able to make the children's costumes.
ok i am tight economical and have a love of sewing, so why not??

fortyplus · 07/12/2007 00:14

Shop bought ones definetely looked down on compared with home made round these parts

handlemecarefully · 07/12/2007 00:14

In our school we are provided with the costumes. I am wondering if there is some slight there. Are we all considered too feckless and dissolute to make our own

nametaken · 08/12/2007 00:18

what horrible women. If anything, it's well off SAHMs who've got time to do homemade costumes.

At the end of the day - who really cares? Don't us women have enough to do and worry about without stuiped women adding to our insecurities.

Homemade costumes are brill and I'm really looking forward to DS being old enough for all that. When my brother was little he played a salamander in his class's play (the lead role don't you know). My dad fashioned and absolutely amazing costume for him out of chicken wire and papier mache. Try finding that in a shop!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/12/2007 00:30

How rude!
Shop bought ones don't always even look like what they are supposed to and are something of nothing imo.
If you can't make one as you are not that way inclined then fine, buy one.
I was soooo proud when my ma made me a tudor costume complete with bussell and bodice in junior school.

She bought some velvet curtains in a charity shop and took me to the sewing shop so I could choose the gems for the bodice.
Ah, the memories....

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 08/12/2007 00:31

What utter tosh. Did you disagree with them?

Are they new money sorts - the modern day equivalent of the 70s Costa del suntan brigade who ripped out cast iron fireplaces because gas heaters looked so much nicer?

[and thank goodness I only had to rustle up pyjamas & a Christmas stocking]

Lilymaid · 08/12/2007 13:22

Rubbish - people with class make their costumes. Buying ready made shows a lack of creativity and commitment!

zippitippitoes · 08/12/2007 13:25

think that is reverse of true..if there is any truth in it

and who cares anyway? s long as they all enjoy the fun of it

ATortIsForLifeNotJustChristmas · 08/12/2007 13:25

DD1 has DS1's shepherd costume which i made a few years ago.
Well a shirt with some string round and a tea towel on her head! She is very happy with it.

BroccoliSpears · 08/12/2007 13:35

Oh dear. And there was me feeling all smug that dd was the only one in a homemade costume for her Christmas party!!

CountessDracula · 08/12/2007 13:41

clearly only a moron would think that

So rather than feel aggrieved that your artistic talents are not appreciated I would pity them for their stupidity

madness · 08/12/2007 19:14

just remembered, ds once won the first price in nursery for his Halloween costume. It was one of my old white t-shirts, with a skull drawn on it in 2 min. He was the only one with a hom,e made costume, that was why he won....
I still have it somewhere (I was absolutely useless in art and drawing etc at school)

islandofsodor · 08/12/2007 22:25

I buy shop costumes beacuse I am hopeless at sewing and at £8 form Asda it is cheaper to do that than go out and buy material etc.

pukkapatch · 08/12/2007 22:37

to the original poster.
i have noticed that the kids with home made costumes tend to be the ones with lots of family memebers around to spend loving time with them and or, a devoted and talented loving crafty mother. i'm not saying those with shop bought outfits dont have loving famiy around, but those with homemade ones defintily have loving family around. iyswim.
