Anyone spotted this new stumbling block?

On the whole, staff are raring to go and if we're told business as usual or close to it in September will get on with it, subject to risk assessments etc.

However, what with the summer being the one time teachers can get away, and having worked through the last two holidays, we have a very high number of staff already booked on holidays with return travel during the last week of the holidays and who therefore will, under current guidelines, be self isolating for the first 2 weeks of term.

Many staff are hoping their holidays will be cancelled, but if they're not, still plan to go, as they would lose the money if they don't.

I've asked today and roughly 25% of staff are booked to travel home during the week of 23 August or later.

So if all (or most) children are to be back in school from 3 September, the quarantine plan is going to have to go.

Nothing like a bit of joined up thinking Grin

Quarantine with have been quietly shelved by then, I wouldn't worry.

RicStar · 24/06/2020 18:04

If teachers are not available to work in their normal working location I imagine they will face disciplinary action, the same as any other employee would. I do agree quarantine will be long gone by then anyways.

UltimateWednesday · 24/06/2020 18:09

OP here, I didn't realise I'd left the daft user name.

No they won't Ric, I've checked. It's beyond their control and was booked in good faith, expecting to be back on time. That's why we've asked now. Anyone who books a trip now that means they won't be able to return as expected will be considered on unauthorised unpaid leave, but those already committed will serve their self-immolation working from home, which doesn't help us open schools.

IHateCoronavirus · 24/06/2020 18:12

I wonder if teachers will be added to the list of exempt from quarantine list.

IHateCoronavirus · 24/06/2020 18:12

Sorry I overdid the lists Grin

UltimateWednesday · 24/06/2020 18:14

I wonder that too, as key workers, although I also tend to agree that quarantine will have been scrapped by Sept or we'll be back to full lockdown

flack · 24/06/2020 18:17

Ah sheesh, good spot OP.

steppemum · 24/06/2020 18:19

well, it is up to them ot be home in time to quarantine.

You don't get 2 weeks extra holiday in order to quarantine, and if kids are in school you can't wfh.

So teachers will have to chose, holiday or their job.

I am a little unsympathetic, and I am an ex- teacher, so no teacher bashing here.
I can't go away, as I cannot take the time to quarantine. Nor can my kids, as they will be expected to be in school on 1st Sept, and having missed 6 months of school, I don't want them to miss another day.I have to work until 1st week of August, so no time for both holiday and quarantine.

I have been wfh and home schooling for 4 months. I am run ragged with 3 teens, one of whom has MH issues.

I would love to not work for 5 weeks over the summer, even though I will still have family responsibilites. So, if the cost of corona is that you get a break from work, but not a holiday, then join the club.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/06/2020 18:20

Thing is, you'd want teachers to be quarantined, since they have indirect access to hundreds of families. What if they've been to a country with high transmission?

steppemum · 24/06/2020 18:20

I've just seen your update that htye are allowed to.

That stinks

Sorry teachers, but no, you don't get 2 weeks extra.

Lockdownlooks · 24/06/2020 18:23

I think you’ll have more than a few weeks cover to worry about if the teachers self- immolate Grin

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 24/06/2020 18:23

My sister works in a school and has been told that if any staff are subject to quarantine following a holiday they will face disciplinary action and the two weeks will need to be taken unpaid.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 24/06/2020 18:26

I think teachers would be able to legally challenge disciplinary action if holidays were booked before the quarantine rules were introduced. They haven't done anything wrong and this is beyond their control.

seenbeensbean · 24/06/2020 18:29

@Hearhoovesthinkzebras

My sister works in a school and has been told that if any staff are subject to quarantine following a holiday they will face disciplinary action and the two weeks will need to be taken unpaid.
Even if they have booked the holiday prior to this all starting?
Devlesko · 24/06/2020 18:30

Well if the teachers aren't there, neither will the kids be.
We could be lockdown again by then, we don't know what will happen during the summer.
We could have a second wave in a few weeks as a result of easing up, we just don't know.

IslaMann · 24/06/2020 18:31

I'm an NHS key worker. I've not had a single days leave since February. I have 2.5 weeks booked off in September for my DD starting school. If she can't start school because teachers are quarantined when they've chosen to take their holiday despite having had 6 weeks off already I will tear the Head teacher and the local authority a new one. Tough shit. Cancel your holidays abroad like the rest of us have had to.

Clarabellawilliamson · 24/06/2020 18:34

But if you cancel, you might not get any money back- and a summer holiday for a family abroad could be thousands! Even if the two weeks were unpaid, they would lose less money doing that than cancelling holidays......

Letseatgrandma · 24/06/2020 18:34

We had a letter from the LEA about this today.

If the holiday was booked before the lockdown and the quarantine period runs into term time, we will be expected to work those 2 week from home, will still be paid and just have to email proof of when the holiday was booked. We have to let them know now, so they can sort cover.

If anyone books a holiday now, they obviously won’t be paid for the quarantine period if it goes into September.

bluesapphirestars · 24/06/2020 18:35

That’s absolutely appalling that teachers would be disciplined for following instructions.

People will just lie otherwise!

ChloeDecker · 24/06/2020 18:35

IslaMann

Did you get a refund on your holiday when you cancelled?

UltimateWednesday · 24/06/2020 18:35

You can say that Isla and I completely sympathise but you can't make it happen by tearing anyone a new one.

bluesapphirestars · 24/06/2020 18:35

That’s fair, letseat

UltimateWednesday · 24/06/2020 18:37

Yes what Letseatgrandma says is exactly the position.

Many staff have had these holidays booked since last summer. Many are hoping they'll be cancelled so they can get their money back but if they're not, they will go or be out of pocket.

Letseatgrandma · 24/06/2020 18:38

Yes, I thought it was fair. It only actually applies to one staff member in my school, for one week when the head investigated. We will just get a supply for that class for one week.

I don’t think anyone needs to be ‘tearing anyone a new one’. In this instance, or ever, really.

I really don’t think it will make any difference!

happytoday73 · 24/06/2020 18:39

Many, many children also have holidays abroad booked for the last week of the school holidays.... I can't see 2 week requirement still being in place by then.
