Seaside schools

Hi everyone,
My husband and I are looking for a fresh start in a new town. We have two children who are primary school age. We currently live in London and want to live by the seaside. The problem is that the schools by the seaside all seem to be average at best. Does anyone know of a nice seaside town (train station not essential) which has excellent secondary schools? We would probably be looking for state schools only and ideally non selective in case our children did not get into a grammar. All ideas welcome. Thanks in advance.

I hear Aberystwyth is lovely, and one of the secondary schools was in the top ten for Wales.

Are you wanting to commute to London or are you willin to move else where in the country?

PurpleAndTurquoise · 01/01/2019 19:55

If it was primary school I would say Beer. It's am amazing school in such a beautiful place.

Devon is mostly good for schools or Suffolk, eg Woodbridge.

Jackshouse - We don’t need to be near London but will probably stay in the south of the country

Whitstable

Is Devin too far? Modbury is a nice village near the sea. Nearest secondary is Ivybridge - excellent non-selective state.

What on earth did @Chloe say to get a removal on this thread??

Northern Ireland - North Coast has excellent schools as does North Down. To be honest there are great school right across the country. There is the grammar system but it’s very different to how it is in england and many of the non-selective post-primaries are excellent schools with fantastic results

Thanks everyone, some good ideas there. I’ll have a look into them.

Swanage?

There are grammar schools near Poole and in Plymouth if that’s your thing.

We live in south east Cornwall in a seaside village. One child goes to school in Plymouth and it’s easily doable. So you could look at lovely seaside villages too if you don’t want a city.

Needmoresleep · 01/01/2019 22:56

Bournemouth/Poole. If you live towards the East some of the Hampshire sixth forms are then accessible.

Nice beach!

Thomas Hardye secondary in Dorchester is very good. Not quite on the coast but very near

4point2fleet · 02/01/2019 16:54

The primary school in Charmouth literally looks out to sea. Every time I drive by I think how lovely it would be to work there. It's a bit hit and miss with Ofsted, but I think it is currently on a good.

4point2fleet · 02/01/2019 18:08

What about Swanage?

PotteringAlong · 02/01/2019 18:09

Tynemouth / Whitley bay in the north east

CLD21982 · 02/01/2019 18:49

Thanks everyone. I have looked at most of your suggestions and although I find a good secondary school the primary’s are then not very good. It seems to be there is usually just one very good secondary but all the other schools in the area (primary and secondary) are not quite so good. I’ll keep looking though. I don’t think we would go to the North of the country due to our family all being in the south.

CripsSandwiches · 03/01/2019 13:23

Folkestone has a good grammar.

CruCru · 03/01/2019 15:05

Brighton? The only thing is, there seem to be a couple of secondaries that people really want and then are upset when they get one of the others.

CLD21982 · 03/01/2019 22:13

I am considering Worthing. The schools are ok and.the location fits other requirements. Does anyone live in Worthing or have experience of the area? Thanks

CLD21982 · 04/01/2019 12:29

I think Worthing is too big and not right for us.
