Boy who urged the killing of a teacher returns to the same school

I saw this in the Times Ed today. I can't find an on line link.

A boy at Gleed Boys School in Spalding set up a website in Bebo that urged fellow pupils to 'kill' a teacher. He also encouraged them to post abusive comments about this young female member of staff.

The Head permanently excluded the boy, but this has been over turned by the governors. The head has to take the boy back into the school. The teacher is off sick, with stress.

Nice.

But is '"Do ya hate her? Wanna kill her? Draw on the white board? Leave a comment" really the same thing as a 'death threat'?

I suppose legally it would rest on the intent behind it but if an otherwise reasonably behaved 14 year old with no record of aggression said this about me, while I would be upset and want him punished I don't think I would feel concerned for my safety.

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:30

Thankyou, part of my point ive been trying to make

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:31

Thanks hulababy

gatewaytoindia · 20/06/2007 21:35

Unpleasant, yes. But in a completely different league to the alleged 'death threats'

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:37

Is it? defermation of character isnt it? whats the difference? im curious?

Dogsby · 20/06/2007 21:38

id say yes to death threat

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:40

so by sayin I have Munchausen's by proxy when you do not know me is not defermation of character?

gatewaytoindia · 20/06/2007 21:40

It's rather difficult to be defamatory about somebody only known as NJ35.You could be anybody.

Dogsby · 20/06/2007 21:41

in ocurt itd be a bd character ref i htink

if you as a witness slag off the defendadnt then that lays you open ot haev your charcter questioned

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:43

You made the comment "Munchausen's by proxy perhaps" and stated I had verbally attacked the teacher, which was not the truth, then you are saying you do know me more than my name here?

gatewaytoindia · 20/06/2007 21:45

I clearly do not know you since you did not verbally attack the teacher.
Will watch and wait.

Dogsby · 20/06/2007 21:45

is it me or is this thread a little bit silly

kiskidee · 20/06/2007 21:46

my last point is it sounds like the school informed the police, and not the teacher. had the teacher made a complaint to the police herself, the police would have investigated a possible criminal matter.

schools are only happy to handle things like this 'in house'. i think the teacher was naive and should have informed the police herself. then the school would have very likely handled the case differently.

to me, the least offence the boy would have answered for was harrassment.

your boy needs to count this episode as a blessing and the teacher learnt a very difficult lesson.

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:46

Attention then i guess?

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:49

As people have made up their minds has anybody concidered that the police feel there was no case as there were no actual death threats?

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 21:51

*considered-long day sorry

kiskidee · 20/06/2007 21:53

you said 'the police were informed' and admitted that you didn't know by whom

you didn't say the teacher made a complaint to the police and the police decided there was no case to investigate.

two entirely different kettles of fish.

the teacher had to make a complaint herself or the police won't investigate it.

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 22:00

No i dont know who told the police but I do know they said there was no case as i spoke to them

kiskidee · 20/06/2007 22:03

there cannot be a case is the teacher never filed a complaint. as i said, if she did, the police would contact you, not you contact the police.

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 22:03

there was a complaint filed

ViciousSquirrelSpotter · 20/06/2007 22:04

I suppose there's no point asking the exact sequence of events, what happened at what point and when?

There's a lot about what didn't happen. Not so much about what did.

Just wanted to say that I have been unlucky to have had dealings with the press, a real range incl R4, The Guardian, Express, Indie and BBC and I really dont trust them at all.
Journalists are often out for a headline stealing story and usually not too worried about the affect of what they write/broadcast.
So I would be very wary of judging what has happened here simply by going on reports from the press...

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 22:12

Which is what I have asked people to be aware of,that they have a job to do which makes money and that is what is important to them not people or facts

kiskidee · 20/06/2007 22:14

sorry to sound sceptical, but it sounds very after the fact when i think this information would have defended your position earlier on.

never mind. i will never know and i can see that you will always stand by your boy.

my one advice to any new teachers, file a complaint with the police first when students make the mistake of taking their bullying outside of school.

then show your school some courtesy by letting them know what you are doing before the police contacts them.

that way, the school takes it more seriously.

NJ35 · 20/06/2007 22:25

I will stand by my son but please tell me where i have said that i am happy about what he did or made light of the situation, gatewaytoindia has slated my character and it didnt take a genius to work out who that person is,others have been cruel and unkind which i dont see as construtive for anybody to have to deal with or read,I thought it was about discussing issues not takin out your stresses on other people-who has simply put a point across due to misrepresentation by the press.
To those people who have been honest but also courteous,Thanks for your opinions, but I do not deserve to have abuse thrown at me,we have learnt our lessons from that behaviour, maybe if you take nothing else away from this you will consider how you say things and what is meant by it,my son has.
