Due today for ds1.........I'm very nervous and he's so laid back he's almost horizontal!

Anyone else?

DS1 has his - not sparkling, but not bad for the amount of work he put in, and I think he is now a bit fed up with himself for having been so horizontal himself earlier, as a bit more effort would have lifted them all.

He has 1 A, 7 Bs, 1 C and 1 D (in German). The A was in Maths which was a surprise - we hoped he would get one in English but he didn't.

Fingers crossed for your boy, luckymum!

Twinkie · 26/08/2004 11:25

Janh - for lots of poeple that would have been sparkling to the degree that you could see the sparkliness from outer space!!

Well done Janhs DS!! XXX

luckymum · 26/08/2004 11:33

He got 2 B's, 5 C's, a D (in Maths and not unexpected) and an F (French and completely expected) He's actually done a lot better than I thought, I was just praying for the five C's he needed for college so relief all round

Well done to your son JanH.

Congrats Luckymums son Hoorah!!

Will he be having to retake his maths - most places insist on at least a C as do most employers these days regardless of college results!!

tammybear · 26/08/2004 11:42

my brothers got the grades needed to do the courses they want. brother 1 got better than we expected 1 A, 4 Cs and rest Ds. Brother 2 got expected 1 C, 1 D, and rest Es. They didnt revise much, just playing their Playstation 2

well done to Janh and luckymum's ds's xxx

luckymum · 26/08/2004 12:14

Twinkie - yes he'll have to resit his maths but its a modular course so he may just have to resit the last one to boost it to a C. Here's hoping

Well done everyone!

JanH · 26/08/2004 13:47

Well done everybody!

luckymum, I don't know if modular GCSEs work the same as AS levels, but DD2 was certainly able to resit modules of those to lift her grades, so I hope your DS can with his maths.

Tommy · 26/08/2004 14:10

My nephew (who is also my godson and DS2's godfather!) got an A for maths and B for RE - and he's only in year 10! I'm very proud

fisil · 26/08/2004 17:11

Well done.

JanH, Luckymum, with modular GCSE maths you can only take each module twice - not quite so nice as A level!

I got my results - they were way above our targets, way higher than ever before. As a school we beat the governments silly old baseline target too even though it was well higher than we ever got before. And one student's results made me cry. He has been at risk of exclusion since the beginning, has a background you couldn't imagine, but is a lovely kid and put everything behind him to get a C in maths. Made me weep (might of course be the pg hormones!)

tallulah · 26/08/2004 17:32

DS1 did better than we expected- 4 As (incl maths & sciences), 2 Bs & 4 Cs (incl 2 English)

He needed maths A, science & history B to get into the 6th form & had been predicted Ds for English.

Took him out for lunch after getting off work early. We're all so thrilled (esp after DDs disappointing A level results). :O :O :O

Jimjams · 26/08/2004 19:13

I did my first ever GCSE (so ancient I did O levels at school). A* for Japanese. Have been called a girly swot several times today . Off out for a curry with my class now. Don't know- may even have one glass of something alcoholic (pregnancy limited).

JanH · 26/08/2004 19:36

Jimjams, you girly swot! Congratulations, you clever thing!

coppertop · 26/08/2004 19:41

Well done, Swotjams! Are you a glutton for punishment or what??

hmb · 26/08/2004 19:41

Always knew you were a star! Congrats!!!!!!

Gem13 · 26/08/2004 20:11

Congratulations to all the young ones and you too Jimjams - an A* in Japanese!!! Was just thinking today about studying something hard but then I pureed some more veg and thought 'maybe next year...'

Well I would say nothing, twiggy - despite the wonderfulness - but then I'm tight and started as I mean to go on with DD1, who got very good results. (Good results being their own reward in Tight World.)

My SIL gives all of ours £20 whatever they get, cos she is generous and nice.

Gem13 · 26/08/2004 21:08

My neice got 7 A* and 3 As. Wants to be a primary school teacher.

Felt a bit sad when I heard my mum's delight. I only got 4 O'levels! Managed to talk my way through A'levels and a degree though so redeemed myself later. Still, would have been nice to have had a good start early on.

tigermoth · 27/08/2004 06:41

well done swotjams and all!

I am impressed by just how many GCSEs all your children were taking. In my day, you were doing well if you sat 8 O levels. Personally I found my O level exams more difficult than A levels or a degree. Half the O levels I took were in subjects I had no feeling or liking for. I was far more happy when I could specialise at A level. Well done again!

charlize · 27/08/2004 08:06

That is so true tigermoth. My ds is not so good at languages but will have to take one at gcse.
A level will be better for him ashe can choose his favourites.
Although don't you worry tigermoth that it will be all change on the a level frontfor our sons.
They can't keep it as it is far to mamy A 's .
They'll probably change it yr before ours sons take them or something and instead of 5 A results they'll make it really hard.

JanH · 27/08/2004 10:14

charlize, compulsory language GCSE has been dropped starting with this year's Y10. There have been quite a lot of low grades at DS1's school, a selective grammar - I expect it's worse at other schools; presumably they've moved the goalposts again in the interests of better average grades overall.

suedonim · 27/08/2004 14:32

Congratulations to everyone with great news on the exams front! Well done.

firestorm · 27/08/2004 21:21

i was just wondering. does anyone know what the national average was on pupils achieving 5 grades A* to C?

Spanna2 · 28/08/2004 13:25

National average was 59.2%
