DS had screening test last week ..managed to nab his teacher in the playground yesterday who said, off the record, he is moderately dyslexic, but the test also showed up some other surprising things....she couldn;t really discuss, which is fair enough , as we were in the playground...

but what other things might have been picked up on? Meeting not until Monday, and I am a little anxious

he is also colour blind and is numerically dyslexic too!

High IQ

lulumama · 13/06/2007 13:05

do you think??????

bless him, he tries so hard at school, always gets glowing report, wants to please his teacher and he has no idea there is any issue...he gets extra help already which will continue...

this all totally new territory for me

What test was it lulumama?

BrothelSprouts · 13/06/2007 13:38

I mean, who carried it out?
Ed Psych or school?

lulumama · 13/06/2007 13:39

as far as I am aware , it was a screening test for dyslexia. to put him in a category of risk. done on computer, don;t really know more than that i;m afraid..done by SENCO at school

OP posts:
BrothelSprouts · 13/06/2007 13:40

Agree it could be a high IQ.
Or perhaps a visual problem that affects how he perceives numbers and letters.
Has he tried using a coloured overlay for reading yet?

lulumama · 13/06/2007 13:41

TBH... I actually know very little about the help he gets..he has not mentioned anything like that re overlays..but then 7 yr old boys tend to be not very forthcoming with anything to do with school.!! I will make a list of things to clarify at the meeting....

Also, if he has difficulty with writing, as in handwriting as opposed to spelling, there may be some mild dyspraxia.
Don't think SENCOs can diagnose these things (including dyslexia), but they will certainly have experience of them, and can suggest things that will help.

lulumama · 13/06/2007 14:12

no, his writing is actually really good.....thanks for the thoughts

My nephew is dyslexic - didn't get picked up till he was 13 - he has a degree in Maths from Oxford, so it could easily be the high IQ

lulumama · 13/06/2007 20:48

thanks ATM......just never been down this route of tests and stuff..am a bit scared, silly i know, as not a big deal

OP posts:
lulumama · 14/06/2007 21:14

well, just picked up a phone message from our doctors about DSs eye test...what now????? have to call tomorrow !

hope he is ok

and what do we say to him re dyslexia? don;t want to make a big deal but also, it is important...

Hmm, IME a computerised dyslexia screening test wouldn't look at IQ. Perhaps the overall diagnosis was that he was 'moderately dyslexic' but his particular profile of strengths/weaknsess was unusual? Whatever the SENCo says, remember that it's the profile, not the overall 'score' that's important - followed, of course, by what they plan to do about it? Keep the communication going.

lulumama · 16/06/2007 18:17

thank so much

got a friend looking after DD when we go to the meeting, her husband is an ed psych, said he is happy to chat with us too, and offer any help or advice . so that is very kind

i am certainly interested to know exactly what is waht, but am feeling a lot less stresseed about the whole thing now!

Your son will no doubt have had a quick screening test developed by/called LUCID which tests phonological awareness and short term memory. This screening is NOT an accurate test for dyslexia- it serves to pick up children who MAY be dyslexic- but they should really have a full assessment. Out of 500,000 teachers, only 18,000 are trained in dyslexia- if your SENCO is not one of them you need to consult an expert who can advise you.
The test will not test IQ as only ed psych's are allowed to use those tests.

ShinyNewShoes · 16/06/2007 22:45

glyn - could perhaps have been the NFER dyslexia screener? - There are various products around now, I think.

glyn · 17/06/2007 08:10

I am not familiar with that- is it paper based or a computer screening? What I do know is that all the tests- and I use paper-based ones myself- are an indication and need to be interpretted by someone trained in dyslexia, who also looks at the child's developmental history.

lulumama · 17/06/2007 09:25

SENCO is trained.... will let you know what happens after the meeting

OP posts:
ShinyNewShoes · 17/06/2007 20:19

glyn - yes, NFER do a computer-based dyslexia screener - also a separate one for dyscalculia.
