Have an interview for a promotion next week for a head of year post, focussed on achievement - we don't do behaviour any more apparantly .

Anyone know of any useful online case studies or useful advice.

Thankyou in advance.

Without teaching granny to suck eggs so to speak, have you got all the data available eg panda, fft stuff? I recently left a school where they were utterly obsessed with prior attaintment data being key to achievement. We did lots of work on target setting as well. Have not had a middle manager's role myself but fire away if any questions.

Sorry, that post sounds pointless doesn't it but I won't do my usual and delete it! Am sure Martianbishop will be around with some better advice!

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 19:30

what is fft?

Fisher family trust. Not sure if it's national or not but it's one of the factors they measure attainment on.Lots of data to do with socio economic situation plus prior attainment etc.

FFThere

popsycal · 20/05/2007 20:01

btw our school, lthough a middle school, has 180 children per year

right
what do you want to know

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:02

It is mainly ideas, teach in a low achieving school although we actually do well with them. Ideas on how to motiavete hard to motivate kids, how to troublespot and intervene and increasing parental invlovement and suport.

you are bigger than us then I will ahve about 110 in my year group, if I get it.

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:03

I also get a bit lost in all the data which has been highlighted as my weakness although I ahve been offered lots of training as thatis something that can be corrected.

do you know all about the value added shenanighans....particularly relevant in your kind of school...

popsycal · 20/05/2007 20:07

are you primary or middle or secondary?

are you up to date with the current initiaives - eg boys' writing etc

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:15

yes we do very well at value added and therefore don't take kindly to people calling it shenanigans , we are a secondary.

I interoduced something really simple. Not specifically todo with achievement directly and the whole school ended p implementing it. I was fed up of merits being unequally distributed as you get the conforming majority (you know, the quite, hard working but not very forceful kids) getting overlooked whereas some teachers give the more 'challenging' children merits for doing simply what is expected...
anyway
each child has a checklist in their planner saying:

  1. I wear my uniform correctly
  2. I hand in my homework on time
  3. I arrive punctually to lessons
  4. I am well mannered to adults and other pupils

Basically you can adapt to fit your situation. Basically it is standards expected of pupils. Pupils not meeting standards have it marked on their sheet (separated into weeks). A clean sheet for half a term gets you a reward (apprpropriate to your pupils). End of term trip organised attended by ony those with clean sheet (ther is another whole year group trip which everyone goes to but this one is an extra)

Works really well but you need to get the staff behind you.....

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:24

yes we have that problem at school.

OP posts:
popsycal · 20/05/2007 20:25

well i was year 6....
so can talk to you about the 'summer slump' in achievement....I also ran a literacy summer school years ago to try to 'bridge the gap'. liaison with primary schools so all do agreed 'bridging units' in final half term....

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:26

wasa going to do something similar but also incorporate automatic withdrawal if the kids have to be removed from a lesson due to bad behaviour.

Where did you do your trips to, money is a huge issue in our school.
