Have an interview for a promotion next week for a head of year post, focussed on achievement - we don't do behaviour any more apparantly .

Anyone know of any useful online case studies or useful advice.

Thankyou in advance.

we do a summer school every summer although it tend to be a drama/music type school.

I could enquire about a literacy one to deal with the summer slump.

ooh i have a brill behaviour sheet as well....pinched that off my FIl who was a deputy head in an inner city comprehensive...

basically a ticky box sheet so issues can be recorded quickly and shared with relevant staff. We found that some children were getting involved in lots of minor stuff but subject teachers not referring as if looked at as an isolated incident, then not worth referring. BUt looked at as a whole picture by the form tutor, then it was huge......

The literacy one was great....I still have the hefty scheme of work that I wrote. Lots of visitors and visits....

Literacy across the curriculum policy - what;s that like?

We made huge inroads in our year 6 sats in writing for english a few years ago by making literacy accross the curriculum more prescriptive and active

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:43

I don' think we have a literacy across the curriculum policy.

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:43

we have something similar for monitoring low level disruption.

OP posts:
twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 20:49

I will email you popsy.

OP posts:
popsycal · 20/05/2007 20:59

yes do email
literacy across the curriculum is a biggy
find out first of all what you have in place ;)

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 21:09

will check what we have in place although we are moving towards a cross curricular curriculum so what is in place will need replacing. The fact that I do not know of a policy shows that if it does exist it isn;t well known.

Have been watching some things from teachers tv to give me some ideas.

when you email i can give you loads of info on how an active LAC poicy can raise standards,,,,,

Blandmum · 20/05/2007 21:44

Single largest imporovemnt due to teacher based intervention has been shown to be formative assessment (from a meta anaysis fo a number of studies). Formative assessment has a fard greater influence than things like VAKI

Google beyond the black box

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 22:01

THanks at first I thought you were telling me to be more imaginative in my googling

twinsetandpearls · 20/05/2007 22:05

I agree MB I use a lot of formative assessment in my own classroom and have seen standards rise dramtically.

rachfran · 21/05/2007 22:02

Sorry to hijack thread, but I am English coord in a small under achieving primary school. Popsycal, I know this is cheeky but would love some advice on how to go about writing a literacy across the curriculum policy and how to impliment it.

popsycal · 22/05/2007 06:32

sorry i havent got back to this....
rachfran email on my address below and i will email you when i get back to twinset
not an expert but it works well in our school 0 however it may be stuff that you are doing already in orimary being ckass based rather than taught by differnt teachers as we are in middle

sammac · 22/05/2007 17:06

Have got stuff home, will post after dinner

sammac · 22/05/2007 20:13

I had to do a presentation on raising attainment and promoting a positive ethos within our school. This is a summary of the RA points I had on my very basic overhead and then I talked about them (obviously have now forgotten what I actually said, but heyho got the job anyway!)( and remember I'm in primary in Scotland so some things not applicable)

In no particular order( think a sun and all these points were on the rays)

Celebrate achievement
High expectations and standards
praise and encouragement
improving attendance and pride in the school
Learning styles taken into account
parental involvement
improving social inclusion
school newsletter/website/blog
ASL
G&T
supported study clubs
Personal Learning Plan
Success criteria displayed
A curriculum for excellence
Effective assessment- aifl
improving quality of teaching and learning
reflective teaching
SMARTER targets
target setting and tracking
HGIOS
working parties

Hope that helps with some ideas to take forward!

Blandmum · 22/05/2007 20:16

Recent studies into learning styles is that you have to be very carful over using them.

In many schools they have been counter productive, whith children getting the erronious impression that they can only learn in their prefered style. (in secondary btw)

twinsetandpearls · 22/05/2007 23:10

I got the job!

Interesting point MB, I like you ahve found that the use of formative assessment raises standards more than VAK.

twinsetandpearls · 22/05/2007 23:11

whatis HGIOS Sammac?
