Is there anywhere in Britain where the housing is cheap(er) and the schools are good?

DH is planning on looking for another job in the next couple of years, and it would make sense to move somewhere with good schools. Does this always mean paying through the nose for a house?

this is similr to mine but a bit overpriced

twinsetandpearls · 14/05/2007 02:12

very overpriced actually unless property is risen dramatically here as it is not great inside.

nappyaddict · 14/05/2007 02:52

south wales is very cheap.

nappyaddict · 14/05/2007 02:53

also cumbria and newcastle.

twleveyeargap - agree, garforth is a good school and if op wanted/could bear to live in micklefield really quite cheap - would have to be careful not to end up at kippax school though. Still plenty of pretty expensive (imo ) houses around Garforth though.

Scotland would fit the bill. Maybe Stirling and surrounding area, although some of the villages(Dunblane, Bridge of Allen, Dollar) are very pricy. Nice town, good schools, gorgeous countryside, central for motorways, handy for Edinburgh airport (30 mins) and an easy commute to Glasgow and Edinburgh for jobs and excellent shopping, theatre, nightlife. rabbleraiser - is housing cheap in N Somerset? We live in W somerset and compared to us N somerset is really expensive. Well where my parents are anyway (Winscombe). I thought it was because of easy reach of Bristol. But it's all relative.

Hulababy · 14/05/2007 12:09

Depends on what you are looking for...

What size house?
Any particular needs/requirements?
What age children?
Need to be near public transport links?

Hulababy · 14/05/2007 12:10

Oh and budget obviosuly, so we know what level of "cheaper" you actually mean.

UnquietDad · 15/05/2007 10:29

Yorkshire varies hugely.
School quality tends to reflect the house prices.

amateurmum · 15/05/2007 10:44

Agree with scootermum - North East Derbyshire has some fantastic schools (in some areas so take care exactly where you live!).

Sheffield has great schools too but imo the house prices in the good catchment areas come at a premium - although not expensive compared to London and South East

UnquietDad · 15/05/2007 10:48

If looking at Sheffield, try S6 - house prices are not as exorbitant as S10 or S11 but some schools are comparable, and it's as near to the Peak District.

Judy1234 · 15/05/2007 21:50

School quality affects house prices. That may well be right. There can be few area of the country with access to so many good state, private and religious schools as where we live in this bit of NW London and house prices are reflected in that. Some people get over this issue by living where they choose, even France and sending the children to board.

toomuchtodo - what is the top secondary school in Scotland? I live in north of glasgow in a not very nice area - 3 bed house - would get £160k for it - ds only 1 at moment but would love to move to a 3bed house somewhere else where primary/secondfary schools are better - any thoughts?

bigdonna · 13/04/2008 15:08

we have been looking in northumberland ,4 bed house £200.000 and education much better some very good schools.

kritur · 13/04/2008 21:48

Trafford area of manchester is reasonably cheap in parts eg, stretford, urmston and there are grammar schools here. We have some of the best results in the country, even the sec mods.

Toothache · 13/04/2008 21:49

I live in Falkirk and you can get a 4 bed detached in the catchment of one of the best Primary Schools in Central Scotland for under £200k.

expatinscotland · 13/04/2008 21:50

Yeah, but you have to live in Falkirk and be near Toothy .

moreJellothanJlo · 13/04/2008 21:59

expatinscotland · 13/04/2008 22:03

Oh, aye, Toothy's the one keeping hoose prices doon round there .

suwoo · 13/04/2008 22:04

Kritur, you are right about the wonderful schools in Trafford, but I wouldn't say it was cheap- unfortunately we were priced out of that area . As other posters have said its all relative.......
