Is there anywhere in Britain where the housing is cheap(er) and the schools are good?

DH is planning on looking for another job in the next couple of years, and it would make sense to move somewhere with good schools. Does this always mean paying through the nose for a house?

depends how cheap!!

i know yorkshire is quite cheap for housing, don't know about the schools though

scootermum · 11/05/2007 21:49

Derbyshire isnt bad..some bits of it anyway, but anything in the Peak district and you might as well be in London house price wise...

FiveFingeredFiend · 11/05/2007 21:50

Yorkshire is actually quite the place to be in some parts. so be carefull.

J20BABY · 11/05/2007 21:51

what do you mean 5fingers?

scootermum · 11/05/2007 21:52

Duh, should be more specific-im originally from nr Chesterfield where the schools are pretty good mostly, and the house prices are ok-its quite a nice if not terribly exciting town, but near enough to Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester and Leeds, (all drivable in 20 mins to an hour respecitively)to make it easy to get somewhere that is..

rabbleraiser · 11/05/2007 21:54

But if we told you, everyone would go there, and then the houses would no longer be cheap and the schools would be over-subscribed .

North Somerset. Yatton.

FiveFingeredFiend · 11/05/2007 21:55

i suppose the term 'cheap' is relative. i am trying to say that Yorkshire is hot stuff re property in some parts. certainly comparible at the bottom end of the market to some south coast areas.

however if you are talking 4/5oo k you will probably get more for your money up north.

SpawnChorus · 11/05/2007 22:03

Oooh this is all v interesting and helpful!! I'm particularly liking the idea of N Somerset and Yorkshire. And Chesterfield certainly sounds great for commutability - will go and peruse the area on rightmove.

FFF - 400-500k? No I'm talking cheap-as-chips cheap.

peterborough region is cheap - but not sure on the new school with no break times.

portonovo · 12/05/2007 14:08

I would have a look at North Wiltshire, North Somerset and selected bits of Yorkshire.

All is relative though - what size house for what size budget are we talking about?

booge · 12/05/2007 14:21

Yatton!

gegs73 · 12/05/2007 15:10

Lincolnshire is very good for cheap housing and good schools. 4 bed houses for c£200k and good primary and secondaries.

mrsjingles · 12/05/2007 15:22

I am also shocked at Yatton - wouldn't want to live there myself and wouldn't way the schools are great either, but each to their own.

KathyMCMLXXII · 12/05/2007 15:27

East Yorks is the place for cheap property and some of the schools are good.
The main thing, though, is that people are really nice up here.

toomuchtodo · 12/05/2007 15:31

we live in the southside of Glasgow in a nice area, our house is 2 beds and we'd get £135k for it, the local primary is very good and we are in the catchment area for the top secondary school in scotland

pickledpear · 12/05/2007 15:33

the isle of wight is best all round everything is cheaper

Judy1234 · 12/05/2007 16:21

...except may be interminable boredom and 1950s ambience may be.

spudmasher · 12/05/2007 16:23

You will have to define 'good schools' for me.

SparklePrincess · 12/05/2007 16:58

How much money do you have to spend? What sort of house/garden do you need for that? Define what you consider to be good schools? 60% A*-C? 80%? 90%?

coweyes · 12/05/2007 17:06

Yorkshire ...who said houses in Yorkshire were quite cheap? - not if you want to live in a decent area they're not!!!!

Judy1234 · 12/05/2007 18:11

Places like Rutland etc are perhaps good value. Bits of Scotland may be? Depends what you want. The traditional answer for richer couples was live where they choose and send the children to board at school elsewhere and then the two don't need to be linked not that I like that option.

rabbleraiser · 12/05/2007 18:23

mrsjingles, I can only say that you're very easily shocked!
