Does anyone have twins in different school years??

OK, I know this is a bit bizarre, but I was thinking about this the other day...

What is someone gave birth to twins, and one came out at 11.59pm on 31st August and the second at 12.07 on 1st September???

Would they have to be in different school years?

I suppose to widen the discussion, what about children (e.g. step children + birth children) who are only a few days apart, but in different school years?

RustyBear · 30/04/2007 12:34

I did know are pair of twins whose birthdays were in different calendar years - born just before and just after midnight Dec 31st & Jan 1st.

MrsJohnCusack · 30/04/2007 12:34

Fillyjonk · 30/04/2007 12:36

Gameboy · 30/04/2007 13:02

Yes ! I should get out more, but am stuck at my desk, so it was a temporary distraction!

Gawd - can't bear to think about the two in same school year - 10 months apart

I know 2 children who are 13 months apart but seperated by 2 school years not one! The young one is so much taller than the older one too!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 30/04/2007 13:31

I know of people with twins who are at different schools and I doubt it's that rare because sometimes (prob due to the higher risks with multiple births) sometimes one is born with cerebral palsy and therefore goes to a special school.

My youngest two are 18 months apart - so only one school year apart.. but in completely different schools (although both mainstream) because my youngest has quite severe SN. He goes to a mainstream that is a beacon school for inclusion. DD could go there too.. and I would have liked her to.. but DS goes on transport and DD is not allowed to travel with him because she obviously doesn't fall into the disability criteria for funded transport. We looked into it; were told she could travel at a price IF there was a space (there always has been!) but that if the space became needed to another SN child, she would have to give it up. And I couldn't have taken her myself because I have to take my oldest to his secondary school, 10 miles away. (Bus fare for whole week would have been too expensive.. no pass allowed as it's our choice he goes there. He is happy and settled, a good enough reason not to uproot him...)

Oh the complex and mad life of ShinyHappy... get OFF the thread woman!!!

ChippyMinton · 30/04/2007 13:34

ttichy, i do too - the oldest is august, the younger is september. My DS are 13 months apart but september and october - i remember spending august holding my breath in case DS2 came early

Judy1234 · 30/04/2007 13:35

Ours are in different classes but same year despite being born in different London boroughs. As someone said below it is not that uncommon for one twin to have special needs which I suppose might lead to what you suggest. I was a year young in school from age 10 and sometimes people do end up in the same year as a sibling.

amidaiwish · 30/04/2007 13:40

how did you manage to have twins in two separate boroughs?
did you whizz off inbetween pushing?

saintmaybe · 30/04/2007 13:40

Oh, Shinyhappy, how ridiculous!

saintmaybe · 30/04/2007 13:42

That school transport can't take your dd, I mean!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 30/04/2007 13:44

Yes we thought so Saint. I would have loved DD to go there. We had health professinals write letters and everything.. but there was no getting away from the fact that she would only be allowed the space (at £130 a term) IF it remained spare.. I think continuity is v.important and have gone to great lengths (re the situation our family is in) to ensure the kids have a happy settled school life. So she couldn't go to DS2's school and that was that. She was upset for a while about it.

ChippyMinton · 30/04/2007 13:51

xenia ?

CaptainUnderpants · 30/04/2007 14:05

nearly birth two years between my two ( not twins but one school year.

Eldest is oldest in his year and youngest is youngest in his year. Should have kept my legs crossed for another month !!

Def a need to get out more post !

GreebosWhiskers · 30/04/2007 14:13

There's only 15 months between dd1 & dd2 but 2 school years as dd1 was born just before the cut-off date & dd2 just after.

Conversely when I was in (very long) labour with ds I read a magazine article about a woman who gave birth to 5!?! kids in 10 months & they're all in the SAME year! She had twins, got pg without realising & when she discovered she was pg she went into very early labour before her first ante-natal appointment. First baby came out, the mw was all set to give her the injection to separate the placenta when baby no2 came out closely followed by baby no3! They're all boys too - can you imagine what her day is like?

Kelly1978 · 30/04/2007 14:17

I wonder if they would bend the rules in that case though? I'd hate mine to be in seperate school years.

JARM · 30/04/2007 14:17

THere is only 15 months between my 2, but i still cant work out where they will be when it comes to school.

Jessi is 4 in July 2008 and Becca will be 4 in October 2009 so im assuming 2 school years apart?

Its just the school round here seem to tell me they dont take them til 5 rather than just turned 4, so in theory, Jess could start school Sept 2009 and Becca September 2010

I dont know!!!

Kelly1978 · 30/04/2007 14:22

They noramlly take them at least as a rising five though, which would mean jessica would start summer 2009, and beccca autumn 2010.
Jessica would go to year 1 in 2009, and becca in 2011, so 2 years?? It's sooo confusing and making my head spin thinkign about it!

fryalot · 30/04/2007 14:24

I have 14 months between my two littlest, but there will be two school years between them.

Dd2 was born in June, and ds on 1st September (not sure whether I would have been better having him the day before - either way, he was going to be the very very youngest, or the very very oldest!)

CaptainUnderpants · 30/04/2007 15:28

JARM - Jess will start school the academic yr begining Sept 2008 - when in that yr she starts will be up to your LEA.

Becca will start academic yr begining Sept 2010.

So 2 school yrs - yes .

blimey had to type that out to get it straigth in my head !

JARM · 30/04/2007 15:45

Thanks CU - its when in 2008/2009 she will start that is confusing - assuming Easter as a rising 5?!

Oh i give up - i hate the school system! I would rather she stayed at home, but i couldnt cope with that!

Judy1234 · 30/04/2007 17:04

2 of my other children almost two years apart in age born NOvember and the later one July are in consecutive school or now university years - one old for her year and brother young for his year.

The twins? One was born fairly quickly at home with my independent midwives here as we didn't havetime to get to hospital. Second one didn't want to be born that day, everything slowed up so we went on a journey to another borough, the first twin a mere visitor - his first trip out, his last trip as the youngest of 4 children.... and then his twin was born in hospital and we came home that night back here.

jampot · 30/04/2007 17:12

our birthday is right at end of august but as our parents found out they were expecting twins only a couple of weeks earlier I dont think this was high on their list of worries - more how they were going to cope/afford us

However from first year infants I was put in the year ahead so I guess this is the opposite of having normal siblings in the same school year
