6 sheets here, I think it's way too much (plus 2 reading books)

Don't worry, Maggiems. I know what you meant . I said the same when posting about how I taught DS2 to read at 3 (after he asked)- it only took 10 minutes a day, so I was hardly ruining his childhood. And, though the school doesn't set any homework, I make sure mine read and try to get them to write diaries when we go away (with limited success).

Thanks Singersgirl. I thought I might get a sympathetic vote from one of the "dreamers " club. I am not in favour of schools giving homework at all during holidays apart from a bit of reading , some children seems to get an awful lot

shouldbe · 31/03/2007 12:57

my dd has some spellings and about 4 reading books. Nothing too difficult and things she enjoys anyway. It's a holiday and they're so little still in Yr1....

julienetmum · 31/03/2007 14:52

Dd age 5 private school

A free choice library book

badelaide · 31/03/2007 15:10

None at all, just the usual reading book.
I do think that's a lot northender, poor things (and you!)

shouldbedoingsomethingelse · 31/03/2007 22:43

none for my DC's in years 1, 3 & 7
two little bits for DS in year 5

Skribble · 31/03/2007 22:48

My kids equal to year 2 and year 5 have none thank goodness. DS and DD will be learning how to build a hut and how not to drive Granny mad. DS has completed his making Mummy a cup of tea and feeding little sister her breakfast training, so he is well ahead in his learning .

We might even take our over due library books back and get some more as it is only 30mt step from our front door again.

Then we go on holiday for a week so that will be very educational.

Kaz33 · 31/03/2007 22:50

4 reading books

MEMsmum · 01/04/2007 00:18

Oops - haven't looked yet! Bad mummy! Probably won't look until Sunday 14 April, panic, turn up at school on Monday 15 to find gates shut and come back again on Tuesday when everyone else does !

Linnet · 01/04/2007 00:25

None, my dd's primary school doesn't give homework in the school holidays and I'd be mightily annoyed if they did.

Weatherwax · 01/04/2007 02:42

2 reading books which she will supliment herself. Only off one day and she's already read one. When she moves up through the school there will be no homework in the holidays. They work them hard during term time and expect them to relax.

Chocadora · 01/04/2007 10:13

none apart from reading book

Judy1234 · 01/04/2007 10:56

Yes good academdic boys prep school and they're year 3. They have a reading book and looks like two sheets each. SOme sort of project thing in it I think. They were complaining but I don't think that's too much over more than 3 weeks off.

I think it's useful for parents to see what children are doing at school, get an idea of how the child writes adn thinks, makes the parent sit down with the child and make some time with the child, hear the child's reading. None of that is very onerous considering they have 12 hours a day in the holidays to watch TV etc. It's a tiny chunk of time for homework. It also gives you a chance to talk to them about school and school work and shows you're interested and involved in what they're doing at school.

23balloons · 02/04/2007 22:22

ds - yr1 came home with 3 reading books, 2 pages of words to copy, the whole list of year 1 & 2 words with a column for me to tick the words he can read and spell, 3-4 pages of work on shapes and a list of words for his usual weekly spelling test. I think that is it off the top of my head.

I couldn't believe it when I looked in his bag but he has already done some today and doesn't seem to mind.

Ibib · 03/04/2007 10:11

What is it with all this homework at such an early age!! We are aiming to burn these little children out before they even started.

No wonder UK came 21 and last in the UNICF report of unhappy children.

My DS is in year 1 and I had a word with his teacher that I do not believe nor want him to have homework at this stage in his life. we can encourage children reading, writing spelling in fun ways by games (scrabble, i spy etc).It doen NOT have to be this formal sit on a table with pencil and paper LARK! Somehow in this country learning has become extremely formal with the fun taken away.

I lived in Holland for 10 years and I can see how and why they were first in the UNICF league table.

kslatts · 03/04/2007 10:46

My dd's (Yr1 and Reception) don't break-up until tomorrow but usually in the holidays they just have the reading book they are reading.

At their age I think school holidays should be about playing and having fun, not doing homework.

lexcat · 04/04/2007 09:58

none not even reding books. DD was a little upset when she thought there was on reading books(loves reading) So we have gone to the libray and libary bus we now have 12 book. 3 of which she has already read and term finshes tommorow. Book would have been nice but I think optional.
Really it to young for homework they need the break all of dd friends and dd look so tired.
