How did Diane Abbott justify sending her son to a private secondary school?

After all of her rants about parents who pay for private education?

The same way she justified having Jonathan Aitken as her son's godfather?

Bubble99 · 20/03/2007 22:48

What? " I was young and I needed the cash."

Or.

" It seemed like a good idea at the time."

I think it was on the grounds that boys, and black boys in particular, find it difficult to stand up to/swim against firmly entrenched stereotypes and peer pressure.

moondog · 20/03/2007 22:51

I've always wondered about this one.

wanderingstar · 20/03/2007 22:54

JA her son's godfather; you are taking the piss Tinker surely ? (And I can't reconcile CLBS with her principles either Bubble99).

Bubble99 · 20/03/2007 22:55

Ah! I see, Fauve.

So, other black boys just have to get on with it but her son doesn't.

How does it go?..

'All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.'

Don't shoot the messenger, though, Bubble I'm not really commenting on what I think of that stance - for once, I'm not really sure what I think of it.

Bubble99 · 20/03/2007 23:01

Oh no! Wasn't shooting you, Fauve.

Am V p'd off about lefty politicians who do this, though.

OP posts:
pointydog · 20/03/2007 23:05

Diane Abbott? 'Cause she doesn't give a shit about alleged 'left-wing' values.

Fauve · 20/03/2007 23:06

You won't often find me stanceless, or with nothing opinionated to say.

hunkermunker · 20/03/2007 23:07

I think she said "Fuck off, I'll do what I like", didn't she? I loathe her.

pointydog · 20/03/2007 23:09

All this left wing, right wing stuff is redundant. I've seen her chatting with Portillo and Andrew Neil and there has been little to tell them apart in left/right wing terms.

Tinker · 20/03/2007 23:09

Wiki entry

moondog · 20/03/2007 23:09

She had the kid christened in the Hof C crypt too didn't she?
No reason why she couldn't of course but it did make me dislike her even more.

pointydog · 20/03/2007 23:10

"despite their opposing politics"

hah

idlemum · 21/03/2007 12:12

Unfortunately it is nothing new. I remember back in the '70's Shirley Williams advocating passionatley the importance of Comprehensive education whilst her children were privately educated.

confusedandignorant · 21/03/2007 12:36

don't mention that bth, stopping the grammar schools in our area the year before I was due to go had horrendous time at the new comp which had previous been a sink secondary modern

Cassoulet · 21/03/2007 12:48

I think she said it was the school which was best suited to her son's needs, so like any parent, she chose to send him there. Any parent would do the same. blah blah blah. I beleive she also thought long and hard about it.

Cassoulet · 21/03/2007 12:49

There isn't a face indicating cynicism.

confusedandignorant · 21/03/2007 12:56

at least diane abbott wasn't education minister

hannahsaunt · 21/03/2007 13:16

IIRC at the time she actually said that she recognised that she was being hypocritical but at the end of the day she had to do what she felt was right for her son rather than her politics - which, lets face it, most of us would do. Lots of respect to Alistair Campbell and his partner for sticking to their guns though at comprehensive education - not sure I will be able to follow my principles through on that one when it comes to secondary education.

shalom · 21/03/2007 19:35

lets face it though if in the future her child turn out to be a dropout and a deliquient evrybody would blame the mother for not educating him properly. So i say good for her i would not want to use my child for any socila experiment they have only got one life

Bubble99 · 21/03/2007 19:39

I have np problem with her opting out of state education for her child.

What I do have a problem with is the fact that she shouted long and hard at those who did exactly the same thing.

OP posts:
idlemum · 21/03/2007 21:49

confused - it sounds like you had a similar experience the one I had. Guinea pig year and boy , was the school dreadful.

miljee · 22/03/2007 09:59

The spectacular hypocrisy is what gets my goat! Have they no shame?! HOWEVER it has long be said that those who seek power, or in this case, parliamentary office are the least equipped to handle it!

And Shalom, it has to be said, a private education is no guarantee against delinquency..
