Our son is due to start primary school in September. He is known as PJ by everyone and has been since birth. When registering his name we were advised against calling him PJ on the birth certificate and called him Philip James Raymond Preston after both his father and grandfather. We always intended to call him PJ and have done ever since. At the recent open evening for reception class we saw that our child?s name was wrong on the admissions list. They had called him James Preston. I pointed out the mistake and said his name was PJ. The teacher advised me he had to be called by the name on his birth certificate. The head teacher eventually agreed for him to be called PJ. Does a school have to call a child by the name on his or her birth certificate?

My grandad was always known as Les, but his first name was Frank. My grandma's older sister was called Edith but only known as Dolly. On the other side of the family I was trying to trace my great grandfathers marriage & having huge problems until I found that the Sarah I'd been looking for actually went by the name of Annie. (of course! )

Obviously a tradition that has been around for a while.

Actually my MIL is called Phyllis but hates it and is always known as Audrey...altho DH does address letters to her as Mrs P A xxxx. I do think that's a bit different from Mary becoming Molly which is originally a pet name of Mary. What i hate is when newspapers (like mine) name eg an accident victim "Mary Beryl Howard, who was known as Beryl" and then quote husband, friend, aunt etc calling her Beryl - well that's her name then, why make it complicated! I think the people in the ST letter should have just put PJ on the birth cert, tho agree with Coddy that it's a bit of a daft name.

Of my four grandparents, none of them go by their actual name. They are (were) officially called Edward, Stanley, Pansy and Eileen. However to the whole world they were Cliff, Stan, Biddy (or Margaret outside the family) and Betty. Maybe it was a generational thing!

He will tell all of his friends that he is PJ, so the teachers will be less effective, esp if you do not back them up...
Hello James would like to answer that question?
PJ stares into space not knowing how the hell they are talking to...
Hee hee
My dd is Emilia but Emmy she has always been, she knows no other..
