Our son is due to start primary school in September. He is known as PJ by everyone and has been since birth. When registering his name we were advised against calling him PJ on the birth certificate and called him Philip James Raymond Preston after both his father and grandfather. We always intended to call him PJ and have done ever since. At the recent open evening for reception class we saw that our child?s name was wrong on the admissions list. They had called him James Preston. I pointed out the mistake and said his name was PJ. The teacher advised me he had to be called by the name on his birth certificate. The head teacher eventually agreed for him to be called PJ. Does a school have to call a child by the name on his or her birth certificate?

I taught a child last year who actually decided to change his own name, and he would only answer to that name and put that name on all his work - it was Spiderman, and he was 7 (mentally 4!!!!). He was incredibly cute though so i humoured him for a couple of days, then after the weekend he forgot about it!!!

Both my dds have long names that we shorten and the school asked at the very first meeting what children like to be called. I told them the short version and they always used it.

They also have both their father and my surname on the birth certificate but since we split and he has decided to have nothing to do with them I have dropped his name and filled out the forms with just my surname. Then you have to show the birth certificate. The school took a photocopy (for some reason) but have always used just my surname.

Sounds a bit Reggie Perrin to me, Coddy!

IME when people use the their childrens second name it's because the first name was given to keep some relative quiet and the second name is the name the parents really wanted.

serenequeen · 04/07/2004 19:29

hula, jack is actually a derivation/nickname for john.

Tommy · 04/07/2004 19:41

Sometimes it just happens! my sister's "proper" name is never used at all and I'm sure if anyone calls her it she wouldn't respond. It just got changed when she was a baby and has stayed like that for 40+ years!
A friend of mine calls himself by his second name as he doesn't like his first name - not many people know that the name they call him isn't his "proper" name!

Hulababy · 04/07/2004 19:43

I know serenequeen, but why???? If someone knows they are going to use a different name for their child, why not just call them that on boirth certificate to start with? Confused!!!

My grandma was jessie but known as eileen because she hated Jessie, then she called her daughter jessie who also hated it so used her middle name mary. Weird, why would you call your daughter the name you hated yourself?

We had some work done by a plumber called Brian Andrew who answered to Andrew. It transpired that his father's name is Brian and he named all his sons Brian (3 or 4 of them) so they all had to use their second names. WTF??????

codswallop · 04/07/2004 19:57

funny name for a dinosaur , Kitty..

LOL how confusing would that be if they just decided to be called by their first names. I can imagine the conversations now at family get togethers

serenequeen · 04/07/2004 19:59

hula, i agree with dino. we call my son a shortened version of his name, but wouldn't have dreamed of calling him that on his birth cert. i'd always assumed people didn't actually know that e.g. jack was a derivation of john.

Janh · 04/07/2004 19:59

Fio, Jessie used to be (still is in Scotland I think) the pet name for Janet.

My MIL's name is Emily and she hates that and has called herself Pat most of her life. (She is N Irish and was in the WAAFs and Pat was the female form of Paddy - even though Paddy should be S Irish!)

Janh · 04/07/2004 20:01

Hello, Brian, Brian, Brian and Brian, how are you? Fine, thanks, Brian. Brian, Brian, Brian and Brian, would you like a cup of tea? Oh, yes please, Brian.

Fio2 · 04/07/2004 20:03

LOL we must be on the same wavelength Jan
