AND you're an active member of the PTA? You must be wonderwoman!

Seriously though, do you enjoy doing this, or is it adding to your stress levels? I think you have every excuse to step back from a few things atm if it would help you.

Flip · 24/06/2004 20:07

I enjoy doing it. I like getting involved and feeling like I'm doing some good. I'm also still on the committee at ds1's old pre-school and was helping organise their 30th birthday bash a few months ago.

mummytojames · 24/06/2004 20:10

i'd do the stall with all the healthy food on it atleast i get a easy day as there would be no customers if not that then it would have to be face painting and get the adults to have theres done aswell it would be good for a giggle

roisin · 24/06/2004 20:13

That's fantastic that it's something you enjoy Flip. Hope you have a successful day, and a surprising break in the weather to bring loads of punters out to spend their money.

WideWebWitch · 24/06/2004 20:14

I'm with Lou too, hell on earth and I've done my time on playgroup committees. Our PTA have pissed me off so much that I refuse to do anything for them. Except moan. When I can be arsed

Flip · 24/06/2004 20:15

I hope so to. Last year the PTFA raised £10,000 for the school during the course of the year. Not bad!

Slinky · 24/06/2004 20:19

I get roped in to help on the Schools fete as the PTA Chairman is DD1s Brown Owl at Brownies! Sadly (hahaha, yeah right) I am unable to help on the day as DH is off paint-balling with his work cronies so I won't be able to "off-load" the younger 2 with him to go and help.

I'm helping the night before in setting up/labelling etc etc. I did this at the Christmas Fete plus spent time on the Toys stall.

However, with the nursery fete I am running the "Soft Toy Tombola". Have avoided the "Face painting" at all costs this year - did that last year and it was SO SO SO busy and the parents would stand over you watching whilst you paint. Made me nervous as I'm not very "arty" :0

roisin · 24/06/2004 20:30

I'm with you WWW ... I feel guilty that I don't help; I went along for a year and was really helpful and enthusiastic, but the way the thing is (dis)organised drove me completely bonkers!

Posey · 24/06/2004 21:10

Just wondered how other schools organise their fetes?
We have a rep (or in our class several)who organise, cajole, badger everyone into helping, so each class or year is responsible for one stall.
We always seem to do crafts cos we like making stuff! At the Christmas fair we made £600+ on our stall.
this time we've got food. Cold buffet plus barbecue (to get the men involved)

I agree about the tombola. Dead quick, finish early and you can go off and enjoy yourself!

Grommit · 24/06/2004 21:13

I am doing biscuit decorating - my first school duty! Obly doing it out of guilt as work fulltime and don't help in class - dd is deligted and has volunteered to be my chief taster

helenmc · 24/06/2004 21:27

posey - £600 on crafts that's impressive - what did you make???

sweet tombola is my fave - you can lust all afternoon over the Dairy milk

allatsea · 24/06/2004 21:31

the cake stall is always the first to finish - which in my view is a good thing!

tigermoth · 25/06/2004 07:40

ha ha lou and www! It's the 'commit' in committee that gets me. Our PTA has more politics than our local council.

Having to restrain my leaping around ds2 has been a great reason not to do stalls, but now ds2 is bigger I am offering my services as a floater. I help out whent the regulars have had enough. No commitment see!

Unfortuantely the PTA organiser knows my background (running market stalls) and has jsut twigged that my current job involves event management. I fear my days as a floater are numbered. Time to have another baby perhaps?

lou33 · 25/06/2004 11:02

Have 10 Tigermoth, anything to avoid getting involved.

jampot · 25/06/2004 11:10

Just out of interest, can I ask how many of your schools' staff help out/have stalls at Fayres (without being bullied into it)?

I was chair for 3 years and so now I just take my kids and don't feel guilty

Slinky · 25/06/2004 11:19

At our school, I'd say near enough all the staff have a stall or run a "show" - not sure whether they're "bullied or not"

At the nursery, (I'm ex-staff, although still cover holidays/sickness) there is a list of stalls and we put our names down for the one we want to do. No bullying involved.

Batters

Spooky - our school fete is tomorrow

lou33 · 25/06/2004 13:42

So is ours!

curlysue · 25/06/2004 13:54

I'm just a woman who can't say no when it comes to a committee!! I can't just turn up without having helped.

I'm doing a cuddly toy tombola. Everyone has loads of cuddly toys they don't want so you do 50p a go everyone a winner! It takes a while labelling up and is mad busy but it feels good.....afterwards!!

It is hard work but worth it I think. We're having an auction of promises in October which can make quite a bit but involves a lot of work.

janinlondon · 25/06/2004 14:21

Oops! Sorry Batters! I am frightening to look at at the best of times!!!

tigermoth · 25/06/2004 14:21

batters, that scenario is one that I dread so much. I hope the stranger was a nice one

Lou - no, tbh I'd rather be active at PTA events than have 10 babies, but it's a close run choice.....

tigermoth · 25/06/2004 14:21

ah I see the stranger was a mumsnet friend.

janinlondon · 25/06/2004 14:23

She'd probably describe me more accurately as a Mumsnet fiend actually!

Jaybee · 25/06/2004 15:59

The bar is the best one to opt for. I usually volunteer for the setting up and clearing away rather than the manning of the stalls although last year I got roped into doing sand art - not very enjoyable - bloody kids kept mixing up the colours
We don't have a summer fete but an autumn fayre and many of the teachers volunteer, a couple of the really arty ones do face painted tattoos on arms and tummies which are quick and go down really well.
