Is £2,968 expensive (per term) for private schooling?

Hello,

I don't know much about private schooling, but included them on our school visits. Our favourite school is a private one. It's definitely our final choice... If she gets a place!

It's £2,968 per term - that includes tuition, lunches, swimming, library and insurance.

Is that expensive???

I think that's about right for where we live , south east

When you factor in childcare & afterschool clubs which your won't need it's not as bad as you think

It's usually around two thousand a term

toffeeboffin · 27/01/2017 13:02

Sounds OK to me.

LIZS · 27/01/2017 13:04

Whereabouts and for what age? Typical for pre prep in SE but probably expensive in NE.

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 13:12

In Essex, for Reception - Form 6.

Most increase around year 3 , so if to year 6 good value but less so at Reception. Do they accept ey funding?

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 13:22

Yes Smile DD will be going into their nursery (which accept funding!)

So it's expensive for Reception, but cheap for Form 6? Thank you.

Seems reasonable for reception, maybe a little low. My daughters school, for reception fifteen years ago was in the region of 12 k a year and her senior school moved up to 25k a year.

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2017 13:24

In the south east I should add,

walkinginto2017 · 27/01/2017 13:25

They usually set fees at reception to hook you in and then they go up as they go through the school. That price is usual for reception but would be cheap if it was still that cost in KS2 - have you got prices for latter years?

elQuintoConyo · 27/01/2017 13:25

Sounds good to me. Mine was about that price for secondary and i left in 1991!

jelliebelly · 27/01/2017 13:27

Sounds about right - check what they charge for each age group though - big hike from preprep to prep for example

LIZS · 27/01/2017 13:27

Local one in SE is 3k in Reception rising to 4.5k years 5-8. Ey funding continues until term after child turns 5.

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 13:28

@walkinginto2017 - it stays at that price (for Reception - Form 6) Smile

ItsJustPaint · 27/01/2017 13:30

About right for kindergarten imo

even in the north east its only a hundred pound or so cheaper Hmm

walkinginto2017 · 27/01/2017 13:33

That's really unusual if they charge the same each year throughout prep!

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 13:34

They definitely do? Is that a warning sign?

Private schools vary hugely in price due to performance, facilities, kudos (hate that, but its true).

£9k a year for reception in SE is maybe a little high for an 'average' Prep. If those prices stay the same through to Yr6 (which Id be very surprised), then thats on the low side.

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 13:35

There is no way I could have read that wrong!

CrumbsThatsQuick · 27/01/2017 13:36

Cheap!
1/2 the price of a Zone 2 London pre-prep.

missyB1 · 27/01/2017 13:40

I tend to look at ours by what it costs monthly, so we pay £900 a month (year 3). It did go up by £200 a month this year and there is another big increase in year 5.

NotThrowAwayMyShot · 27/01/2017 13:40

DS & Dd went to a school which charges £3,031 for pre prep & £3,373 including lunches per term (Midlands) so I would say that's cheap.

dodgydonkeysdoodah · 27/01/2017 13:53

Doesn't strike me as particularly expensive as they go, but it must depend where you are and the level of facilities / status compared to local equivalents. My sister pays over £5k/ term each for her two (R and Y1), but that is inner London and a very desirable school. It goes up to over £6k / term as the child reaches senior level (by which time she will be spending more on school fees than my entire household income!)

greenfolder · 27/01/2017 13:53

reasonable but expect/factor in a 5% price hike every year and be pleasantly surprised if it is less. I am looking at prep as we are relocating. Once I have taken out £1900 for breakfast and afterschool club and £500 for lunch it works at at £3k a term ( 11500 pa gross). That is for years 5-8.

itssquidstella · 27/01/2017 13:56

Cheap by London standards, probably about right for other areas.

Prep/junior schools in London are usually around £4K a term; senior schools cost £5-6K.

itssquidstella · 27/01/2017 13:56

Sorry, £5-7K.
