Is £2,968 expensive (per term) for private schooling?

Hello,

I don't know much about private schooling, but included them on our school visits. Our favourite school is a private one. It's definitely our final choice... If she gets a place!

It's £2,968 per term - that includes tuition, lunches, swimming, library and insurance.

Is that expensive???

Cheap. Compared to zone 2 London. We're at £14k a year for a 4.5yr old!

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 15:06

Where have you got that only half continue. It's 40 for ages 1-3........... 1-3 isn't a year group!!

It has specialist teachers for science, music, PE and drama, I like that. You can't find that in many state primaries and tbh, I think their results are pretty decent.

Why don't you say which school
It is? You'll get better advice about it & it's not going to out you. Plenty of people will have applied to it.

carrotcakecupcake · 27/01/2017 15:13

That sounds the same as the pre prep we've looked at, I live in the SW and there aren't really many similar options (more choice for secondary).

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 15:16

Annie??? I would happily say the school but how will that help? Also, not many people know the school (I asked about it on here once and never got any replies!)

Sorry misunderstood - thought you meant 40 per year group in nursery.

If you liked it, it suits your family and seems the best option for you guys, then fantastic.....sounds like you've got the school you want.

MirandaWest · 27/01/2017 15:24

Have looked at the school's website (not hard if you google the fees) and if you do need before and after school care there is an extra charge (if you needed care from 7:30am until 6pm it would be £20 a day)

Stilitzvert · 27/01/2017 15:29

That's a good price. One of mine is 3085 plus lunches reception to year 6 and one is £4350 including lunches from year 3-6, R-2 is a bit lower

BigGreenOlives · 27/01/2017 15:30

How many boys leave at the end of year 2 and year 3? I think 16 a year is just too small.

DryIce · 27/01/2017 15:33

I have a stupid question...I have just realised I don't know how many terms kids have here? I am not from the UK - is it 3 or 4 terms?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/01/2017 15:33

What school is it?

LIZS · 27/01/2017 15:34

Is it co-ed? Just wondering how broad the potential friendship group is. Also for competitive sport they won't be able to field many teams. If your child turns out to be very sporty/musical/dramatic/arty are there enough at a similar level or do those leave to go elsewhere.

LIZS · 27/01/2017 15:34

3 terms per year

mouldycheesefan · 27/01/2017 15:56

16 in a year group would suit shyer children or those that struggle with confidence etc.

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 15:57

Maldon Court Prep.

Be cautious about those leaver stats - same child may have been offered 2 or more places/scholarships.

BROOKSFAMILY · 27/01/2017 16:17

Yeah, true. That doesn't massively bother me, I just really like the school (on the visits) but was wondering if it seems about right. Seems like the only 'odd' thing is that it their fees don't increase as you go up the years. I might need to have another visit/look at the other school which we were considering too. Thanks though

I like the straw hats and the school photos are cuter than cute Blush

I wouldn't pay for primary but I would pay for secondary education.

Stilitzvert · 27/01/2017 17:26

I agree that 16 in a co-ed is too small. Ours are both 22, co-ed and that's the minimum I would be happy with from KS2, if the classes were smaller I would want a 2 form year group.

originalmavis · 27/01/2017 17:29

Jesus, we pay 7k a term! It is in London though (rip of central).

ChocolateWombat · 27/01/2017 17:57

Yes OP definitely find out the ratio of boys and girls in every class in the school. I'll bet you'll find at least one that has 5 or fewer boys or girls. That's just not enough to ensure there will be people who click together and to prevent fallinfpgs out becoming pretty disastrous, especially for girls. And you can never know what the ratio in your own child's class will be - it is out of your hands.
Class of 16 is okay but I too would want at least 2 classes per year of that number and ideally more.
Think too about the limiting effects on ability to set the children for things like maths - there will only be 1 teacher for that class and perhaps not that many in any ability area. Larger schools with several classes can use all of the teachers and set acres the year group, having decent numbers of each ability. You could find your child was one of only two who is very able or very limited and needing extra help in a group of 16. Greater size brings all kinds of benefits from staffing - more extra curricular activities, probably more trips, probably a wider range of expertise and interest and just more adults to interact with....all good in the older years especially.
Plus very small might have financial risks. We are always hearing on here about small prep schools closing without much notice. Just things to consider. Clearly though, with all those things in mind, people do still pick tiny Preps....all fine, but important to be aware of these potential issues in advance of decision making. Good luck in deciding.

EnormousTiger · 28/01/2017 16:53

It sounds fine to me.
With prep schools I would always look at destinations of leavers. Where do most pupils go and is that where you want your children to go at that stage.

HostaFireAndIce · 29/01/2017 18:52

Ds's school in Oxfordshire has one price for pre-prep (Reception - Year 2) £3200 a term and one price for prep (Years 3-8) £5000, so ours doesn't really rise per year either. Sounds like a decent price. Does it not go up to Year 8? Most prep schools do as many public schools don't start until Year 9. It may be an indication of which schools they are feeding (not necessarily a bad thing, but worth considering!)

BizzyFizzy · 30/01/2017 05:05

That's cheap. The prep school I work in ranges from £5300 - £6000 a term.
