INSET DAYS...

poppiesinaline · 20/02/2007 13:42

please tell me why they can't be held during school holidays?

I mean... teachers get enough time off after all...

I don't mind too much.... its quite nice having one off without the other... but for those parents that work, it must be a PITA.

I had this discussion with a friend of mine who is a teacher and she was at my suggestion that she should have to 'go to work for a day or two' during one of her many weeks off.

I will not join in, I will not join in...

donnie · 20/02/2007 14:48

I am posting at work hana. I am on a free.

See - it really is a piece of piss!

percypig · 20/02/2007 14:48

Custardo - a lot of us do say "the holidays are great". Very few of us (at least on mumsnet) go for the woe is me line. I agree many jobs are tough, most people work hard, and few jobs are as rewarding as teaching, on a good day. However, as others have said it's frustrating to hear or read the same misconceptions over and over again.

My dh is a GP, quite a difficult job, and he used to make plenty of comments about the easy life of a teacher - until he started teaching medical students and other doctors and realised how hard it is, and his 'students' weren't even teenagers!

Olihan · 20/02/2007 14:49

Custy, I know the point you're trying to make and you are right. Any teacher who said they didn't enjoy the holidays would be either lying or mad!

Damn, dd's awake, going to have to go....

I used to post at work in my non contact time. Advantage of being an ICT teacher meant I could have a MN window open while doing my other work

poppiesinaline · 20/02/2007 14:50

yes, Hulababy.... she is a team leader. But by being a teacher and getting all the holidays that enables her to take on another job and earn more money. IYSWIM

I mean good for her I say. Nothing against that at all.

anyway... we seem to have digressed....

Teachers get more holidays than other professions, so why put INSET days in the term times and not when the children are already off?

And don't give me all that 'we teachers work hard' blah blah... so do other professions...with far less holidays....

donnie · 20/02/2007 14:52

yeah well, just keep running.

That is been answered already! They already ARE in the holidays!!! Just now, since Baker decide to alter them slightly, those 5 inservice training days can beplaced in the school year as the school sees fit - based on training requirements. INSET is not new.

mummymagic · 20/02/2007 14:55

I actually think teachers (in London anyway) are paid pretty well compared to other graduate jobs (apart from city type things) - around £30-40K for an experienced teacher, compares well with friends in media/theatre jobs and pro rata salaries for part-time. IMO its not the money that puts people off but the actual task (attempting to educate kids who don't want to be educated).

Lie most jobs, a lot depends on where you work (and not really the kids but the management structure and support).

INSET days are part of school holidays though (to go back to original post).

katzg · 20/02/2007 14:55

Marking money aint all that great, DH has been doing it for a couple of years and it takes over ours lives for the 3 weeks the papers are here. He marks constantly from the moment he comes in the door from work (marking is often in the last weeks of term not the hols - papers have to be marked from the day after the exam is taken)until the early hours of the morning. He marks around 150 scripts (A level) which on average are 10 plus sides of A4 and i think he gets £3.00 per paper. Its really pants money. The reason he does it is because he's not interested in becoming a head teacher, he loves to teach and doesn't want to manage, and the only prospects of promotion are by becoming a chief examiner.

So in addition to his normal wage he will getan extra £2500 ish for his marking this year, oh and this is all taxed!

Olihan · 20/02/2007 14:56

Poppies, do you mean, rather than them being in the middle of a term, eg, tomorrow, they should be in August, say?

oh LOL Hulababy... you are just not getting my point....

ok for example...

last week was half term.

DS1 went back to school Monday.

I have DD off Monday and Tuesday INSET days

DS1 and DD will both be at school Wednesday and Thursday.

DS1 has an INSET day Friday.

Now for me, this is fine... no problem. But FOR A WORKING MUM this means she has another week on top of half term to sort out childcare. Why not put the INSET days last week... while the kids were off on half term?

I don't think you understand some previous posts poppies. The legal number of school days is 190 for pupils and 195 for staff. The 5 staff days are to be used at the discretion of the school, and as has been stated before it's not always appropriate to have them during holidays.

For example - here in Northern Ireland the curriculum is changing at KS3 and a number of our days this year are being spent preparing new schemes. We have an INSET day next month which has to be in the middle of the month because it's being run by people from outside the school and that's when they're available. We often have an INSET day around the time of Open Night so part of the day can be used to set up the hall, rather than disrupting a day's lessons.

Marina · 20/02/2007 14:58

I think you are all being very patient, I really would not bother

donnie · 20/02/2007 14:58

( bangs head against a brick wall).

Olihan · 20/02/2007 14:58

Percy, I think my dh is running your training!!

poppiesinaline · 20/02/2007 14:58

and if they are part of the 'holidays' already, make say half term or summer hols longer by 5 days... so that all children are off together?

Am I making no sense to anyone??!!!
