I'm afraid I generally find out most about whether they know their sounds and can put them together properly... and it doesn't greatly cheer me

TrinityRhino · 18/01/2007 10:15

the little girl with the not so great upbringing may just have a natura; ability which is just wonderful for her. I hope she is encouraged to enjoy books and continue to flourish

I find you can tell more about them when you open their book bags to put letters in and discover the last 3 weeks letters still in there - and how often their reading book gets 'initialled'.

yep I'm nosey too

100PerCentCod · 18/01/2007 10:18

i always 'sniff' them - some smell so sickly from sweet cereals.some over powering fabric conditioner. You can do a full social survey - cant help it

whatkatydidntdo · 18/01/2007 10:19

I listened to a child once and he started the session by saying "I aint reading this sh1t!" "my shoes are sh1t aint they?" This was of course designed to shock me but I calmly said choose another book then, I like your shoes etc etc He started to read (informing me that he would read 1 page them bugger off)and then (34 pages later) I couldnt get him to stop.

Funnily enough I now read with his sibling and its like cloning!!LOL

TrinityRhino · 18/01/2007 10:20

finger nails are a ded give away too, especially first thing in the morning before they've had chance to dig in the dirt

NotAnOtter · 18/01/2007 10:23

i swear when i changed to an after lunch slot some of them used to have bad breath - really put me off.
Never used to bathe my kids every day until i heard readers - you learn alot about smells!

SKYTVADDICT · 18/01/2007 10:23

I used to read with the whole class (Yr 1)and was always surprised at the varying abilities of children the same age.

I used to go in on Monday morning when they were all supposed to have read over the weekend and brought their books in signed etc. It was always the same ones who hadn't read or didn't even bring their book bags. It made me much more aware of actually doing it with my own kids as there may be some nosey sod in their class who would look down their nose at me if we hadn't!

NotAnOtter · 18/01/2007 10:24

you fall in love with the nice ones and could take them home!

Lucycat · 18/01/2007 10:24

otter - you need soem of that stuff that Qunicy puts under his nose when he finds a corpse

Hallgerda · 18/01/2007 10:50

Year 5 I'm afraid, Trinity. The school is doing Jolly Phonics with those who are struggling most, which does seem to be working.

People on here frequently say it's perfectly fine that teachers don't routinely listen to reading, but I do wonder whether some of the children I've listened to would have had their problems picked up earlier had they read to a teacher more often. Expecting parents to sort their own children's problems out is unrealistic when they can't read themselves, or if they have eight children.

whatkatydidntdo · 18/01/2007 10:53

A telling thing is where they put their hands when they are reading!

One lad by the 2nd line they are down his trousers everytime!

TooTicky · 18/01/2007 10:58

Omg, feeling paranoid here, but if, say, a child reads prolifically at home but rarely brings home his reading record and seems incapable of choosing books he actually wants to read in school then obviously that would give a falsely bad impression. And some children just are permanently grubby except for the 5 minutes or so after a bath.
And the smell of fabric conditioner is HIDEOUS and very noticeable when you don't use it.

100PerCentCod · 18/01/2007 11:56

in year three we only hear the bad ones or th ones who are neglected. ( not necc linked to income too)

foxtrot · 18/01/2007 12:03

Crikey, i've just volunteered to start listening to reading in reception, and now i'm all worried. Any tips? Must i stop using fabric conditioner in case the kids sniff me?

100PerCentCod · 18/01/2007 12:05

no bit find out fomr the teacher how much leeway you have to write thigns int he book and if youc na change levels or shewants to do that etc
