Is anyone familiar with this version of the Christmas story that ds was told in Reception

Bearing in mind that his version is not always entirely accurate, ds1 came home from school and told me that they had been talking about Christmas so I asked what the teacher said, expecting at least something resembling a version of the Nativity story.

But he told me that a tree had been very cold and lonely and then some birds came and decorated it to make it feel better - I am utterly bemused. I realise this may be some attempt by the school to be PC but still find it strange.

Well it may be a christmas story as apposed to THE chrsitmas story. There is a story called the little fir tree where I think all the big fir trees get cut down and the little one is left...

plibble · 22/11/2006 20:17

I think that my niece did this story (or something similar) as her nursery christmas play. I don't think they dressed it up as the christmas story, though...

Tommy · 22/11/2006 20:19

at DS1's school, I gather that the etachers all got abit fed up of nativity plays so now they always do one that is a Christmassy story but not you Mary, Joseph, shepherds etc (or that they are they but the focus is on something else IYSWIM)

This year they are doing something called Whoops-a-Daisy Angel

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 22/11/2006 20:21

I think a lot of the schools try and do something different other than the nativity so they do lots of the other christmas themed stories e.g. the little fir tree, night before xmas, babooshka, frosty the snowman etc. Just means that there's a bigger scope for possible - you can only do so much with the nativity if you see what I mean? Plus there is the thing where those that aren't religious can be involved in lots of things too. We take our lo to the nativity at the local church so its nice if they get to do other stuff as well as the nativity I think.

mummydear · 22/11/2006 20:22

Do schools ( which aren't church schools) do actual navity plays any more?

I think they do something losely based round the theme. Dont be surprised by it.

One of my DS is an elf this year I dont recall them being around the stable !

saadia · 22/11/2006 20:23

Yes, it does sound like the fir tree story. Thanks all for enlightening me .

I was just thinking back to when I was at school and it was just the Nativity and Christmas Carols - things have really changed.

whoops-a-daisy angel is really rather sweet.

The story of the nativity is there, but it is played out around an accident prone angel who is always getting into trouble. In the end it is this angel that 'saves the day'

rather nice message

ScroogeMacDog · 22/11/2006 20:34

Back in the mists of time (1980ish ) my primary teacher made us do a version of the Christmas story where the spiders were watching little baby Jesus in his stable and left trails of 'tinsel' on the trees.
I know, I was that spider!
Sounds like your ds did a less mental version of that!

JanH · 22/11/2006 20:37

My kids have done Mother Christmas's Journey (twice I think), one about a little spaceman, and one about a grandad reading a story to his grandchildren and all the characters come to life - they all managed to include a nativity scene though

JanH · 22/11/2006 20:37

Oh, and a babushka's journey and one about the Christmas Rose (???)

Blandmum · 22/11/2006 20:38

The very hopeless camel is being done (again) THis makes it my third time of seeing it!

Eowyn · 22/11/2006 20:38

dd is doing a "proper" nativity called "It's a baby" - they are way too trendy. One bit she was singing today had a line about Jesus followed by something about wiggling those hips. Not much to be said about that.

Tommy · 22/11/2006 20:41

ooh thanks mb - I'll look forward to it then.
DS1 has to introduce it and tell the audience who Whoops a daisy is..... I'm a little concerned - think they picked him because he is the best reader in class but he can't actually speak very well....

nikkie · 22/11/2006 20:44

at jesus wiggling those hips.
we are doingone at Rainbows about 2 mice looking for food that eventually arrive at the stable and my school is doing 'whoops a daisy angel' the dds school wwrite their own and have no ideas about what they are doing.

ticka · 22/11/2006 20:47

at our school the littlies - reception - do the nativity and the rest is a free for all - as long as it is truly christmassy. There won't be a dry eye in the house when year 5 do a Victorian Christmas this year - ah, bless.

chatee · 22/11/2006 20:55

anyone seen 'the sleepy shepherd'???
i can still remember the main song from two years ago...

apparently we find out on friday what the school production will be this year.....it's already cost me £12.50 for a train ticket for my mum so she can baby sit[and a grumpy dh as mum is staying overnight]

Glassofwine · 22/11/2006 21:09

Tommy - my dd did whoops a daisy angel last year in yr2 - it was fab

julienetmum · 22/11/2006 22:47

Dd is a narrator in WHoops A Daisy Angel. I can't wait to see it.

We are doing The Tale of the Christmas Tree (cast of fairies and gremlin goblins plus a whole load of trees). Goblins steal the special Xmas box and the Fir Tree does the Fir Tree Bop.

ALso Bella Bella Cinderella.

Tommy · 22/11/2006 22:51

whoops-a-daisy gets around then!

(Ds1 only in reception so all this is new to me )

hullabaloo · 22/11/2006 23:00

chatee my sons class are doing the sleepy shepherd this year. Is it any good? he can't tell me anything about it and hasn't mentioned any songs yet.

julienetmum · 22/11/2006 23:24

I loved The Sleepy Shepherd, my dd is now 11 and did it in yr1 and can still remember some of the songs. It's just so cute.

Tortington · 23/11/2006 08:16

what a load of tripe.

no one would dare bastardise any other religeous day into an unrecognisable form.
