Public School Stereotype

Trendsetter2000 · 24/04/2015 19:33

I know there's supposed to be a "public school" stereotype, but do you think there's a difference between someone who's attended private school in north london compared to south west london? Do you think private day schoolers are different to boarder schoolers?

OP posts:

that statement about public schools in the UK being those that offer some free places is simply not the right definition. Plenty of girls' day schools offer full scholarships and are not HMC schools.

The main differences are between fee paying and non fee paying.
The better boarding and day and mixed and single sexed.

I don't think you can generalise across bits of London. Some schools get top 10 results and others take less academic children in all bits of London and across the country.

I prefer very academic day schools which are single sex and that has worked well for all the children, 3 of whom won music scholarships.

The Economist article was in last weeks one - I got a bit behind over Easter!

I do loathe terms like "attachment disorder"
They do nobody any service.
But they do make nice fat fees for shrinks Smile

HG are any of these people for real? What planet have they all fallen from, not one posting is accurate or correct? this is 2015!!

singersgirl · 26/04/2015 21:26

My posting was correct and uncoloured by emotion.

MN164 · 26/04/2015 22:37

Maybe Bose or Sonos is a public school stereo type?

Mominatrix · 26/04/2015 23:03

Nah, too common - naim or Linn.

ZeroFunDame · 26/04/2015 23:13

I was just coming back to say more likely something from an almost nameless company sold only in one tiny outlet up a back street in Oxford.

Or Angry laboriously put together by hand from things searched for in Maplins ...

MN164 · 27/04/2015 07:46

Now we're into high end audio discussion this thread has taken a turn for the better. Why don't we all categorise ourselves by the brands of speakers we have in our homes. Seems just as spurious but much more fun.

Meridian, B&W, Anthony Gallo.

Which speaker brands are in your house? Smile

Mominatrix · 27/04/2015 09:47

Far more interesting, I agree.

I'm old skool and have McIntosh. I'll look into Meridian and the Gallo as we are looking to update to a much more modern system.

MN164 · 27/04/2015 10:10
Wink

Meridian for the "in your face" dedicated music listening or surround sound movie monstrosity (with drop down projection screen).

Gallo for the super high quality micro speaker, discretely set up on the wall, along with a B&W subwoofer hidden behind a cupboard.

I wish we had that ... Smile

happygardening · 27/04/2015 13:32

We have a record player apparently the sound quality is better for classical music. I worry my DH is a younger version of Richard Ingram.
A friends DS asked what a record/record player was and was surprised when we said you had to turn it over.
We've even got 78's including a wonderful recording of Yehudi Menuhin player Mendelssohm which goes on for about 20 records you have keep getting up and changing it or turning it over so it slightly detracts from the enjoyment of it.

MN164 · 27/04/2015 14:14

A stack of 78s and a tall spindle. That's "old school" Wink

peteneras · 27/04/2015 14:35

'Which speaker brands are in your house?'

Naim, Sonus Faber, Dynaudio and Linn (X3) - mad, I know.

MN164 · 27/04/2015 14:50

Boom. That's a lot of speaker going on.

Still waiting to read about those with Sony, Roberts or a Bluetooth speaker. I prefer this kind of branded stereotyping....

peteneras · 27/04/2015 14:52

Oh! Forgot about the Rogers. But not sure this is working any more - hit by lightning. Shame as this pair still look brand new and still in its original boxes. Anyone knows where to get them repaired/replaced with original speaker units?

happygardening · 27/04/2015 15:16

I have a Bluetooth speaker for listening to audiobooks whilst I'm gardening, is that any good MN?
DH listen to R3 on this ancient "Quad" radio with some other similar Quad box attached as well, a pre amp or pre radio or something similar, all going through a Naim amplifier. The radio is attached to an enourmous external arial that half the birds in the county use as a perch. Just to make us sound even more weird "old school" no TV!

happygardening · 27/04/2015 15:18

peteneras DH had his speakers serviced somewhere I think or maybe it was the quad radio/attached box I'll ask him where and let you know if it was the speakers.

TalkinPeace · 27/04/2015 15:36

speakers
hmmm
any old junk because my tinnitus is so bad that all I hear is a cassette with the dolby button switched off Smile

MN164 · 27/04/2015 16:00

I have very naughtily hijacked this thread haven't I? Sorry OP. Biscuit

Rogers and Quad ... hmm I'm getting some grammar school, engineering type flavours. Perhaps a touch of BBC production to boot.

Love it. Keep them coming.

(Still no Sony or Teac - perhaps a bit of Wharfdale just to balance it up a bit.....)

happygardening · 27/04/2015 16:00

I remember a "Dolby" button did it stop the hissing sound?

happygardening · 27/04/2015 16:08

DH has neither a grammar or an engineering background/career Im sorry to tell you MN. Just a good old fashioned Elite education focusing in particular on classics and a love of classical music instilled by his DH who was also educated in the same way. So the initial "old school" stereotype was I suppose nearest the mark.

MN164 · 27/04/2015 16:14

HG

No apologies needed. Bad guessing on my part.

I really must formulate my social stratification based on speaker brands theory and gather some evidence first, before making foolish guesses. Blush

peteneras · 27/04/2015 21:04

This gonna be the ultimate Public School Stereotype. Grin

HG, thanks for the offer. I’m looking to repair or replace the damaged Rogers speaker units with the original but unfortunately the Rogers company it seems have been bought over by a certain Hong Kong company and all activities are now carried out in the Far East.

MN164 · 28/04/2015 08:20

This guy could help or might know who can (fixed a valve amp for my Dad).

There are 9 Public schools in England (Charterhouse, Eton, Harrow, Merchant Taylors', Rugby, Shrewsbury, St Paul's, Westminster, and Winchester. It's to do with their history and foundation, not current scholarship schemes.
