Dd1 is in year one and will only have reading homework, the teachers has said, which I'm delighted with actually! I just dread all the homework stuff so much!

dd was in yr1 last year - she got reading homework for the first 1 and a half terms and then reading and spelling (5 words once a week) for the last one a half terms

foxinsocks · 08/09/2006 19:25

I don't look forward to them having it either!

LIZS · 08/09/2006 19:28

Looks like a mixture of reading and spellings.

cece · 08/09/2006 19:30

Been to a meeting today

from half term weekly spellings to learn 10 I think!

emkana · 08/09/2006 20:12

mon - worksheet
tues reading
wed no homework
thurs reading
fri worksheet, reading and spellings.
I don't mind it mostly -it's quite a good home/ school link as you know what they are doing, and how your lo is getting on with the work.

Sonnet · 09/09/2006 13:48

reading daily
weekly spellings to learn (up to 20 dependent on ablilty)
Handwriting sheet with a week to complete ( this is voluntary as needs high degree of parental support)

DD2 just gone into year 1 and it is exactly the same as DD1 had - not too taxing

Gobbledigook · 09/09/2006 13:49

Ds1 gone into year 1 on Tuesday. So far, only reading but I'm pretty sure they start on spellings soon.

I'm helping out in the classroom on Tuesday mornings so will get to nosey at what's going on! Can't wait!

Gobbledigook · 09/09/2006 13:51

Reading here is really whenever - they read one to one in class about 3 times a week so I usually get a new book home on those days and I always read it with him.

On the other nights, he either reads the same book again to his Dad or Uncle or whoever is around or he might pick another book or he might do nothing.

There is no 'homework' set as such atm.

airy · 09/09/2006 13:54

DD just started Y1 and we are getting reading home every day, new books given out when they've finished the one they have, however long it takes them. We'll do reading whenever dd wants to do it I think.
Other than that we'll get homework home on a Friday to go back on Monday, a woksheet on whatever they've been covering that week apparently.

Dd has had 1 book home so far for reading and has to bring in some family photos for a topic next week. That's it so far!

AllieDelOllio · 09/09/2006 14:21

daily reading, weekly spellings

Kaz33 · 09/09/2006 14:22

Back on wednesday, nothing yet..

coppertop · 09/09/2006 14:55

Ds1 was in Yr1 last year. They had a maths worksheet each week that took about 5 minutes to complete. They also had 10 spellings to learn each week. Reading books weren't changed very often though so he usually had a new book every 2 or 3 weeks.

Altogether it took about 10 minutes each night and there was nthing at weekends or during the holidays. A very good balance IMO.

singersgirl · 09/09/2006 16:41

Back on Wednesday and nothing yet. But from what I've heard from friends they get spelling from Term 3, but before that just reading.

DS1 in Y1 in another school had reading nightly and a weekly mental maths topic to practise - eg counting in 2s, all pairs of numbers that make 20, adding 10 to numbers.

scotchick · 09/09/2006 16:47

Singersgirl - I take it that other school set mental maths homework very far into the first year of school??? My ds is just learning how to write numbers in primary one let alone adding 10 etc. Doesn't even understand what that would mean!

Not bothered though. Our school doesn't particularly focus on homework which I'm fine about. IMO at this age, homework doesn't make a great deal of difference.

I do a lot of reading with ds and some books include counting, numbers etc. That'll do me.

Gobbledigook · 09/09/2006 16:49

scotchick - yr1 is the second year of school, I think you may be thinking about 'reception'

scotchick · 09/09/2006 16:54

ah yes, forgot about that!

singersgirl · 09/09/2006 19:03

As GDG says, it was in his second year of school, and they started after the October half-term. There was nothing to write down, and you were just encouraged to practise it with them for 5 mins a few times in the week.

The first thing they started with was saying one more than a number up to 30 - some of those examples were from later in the year.

curlew · 09/09/2006 19:43

None yet - and I hope none to come. DS is only 5 - if I had my way he wouldn't be at school at all yet, never mind doing homework. Sorry, must get off my hobbyhorse......

nikkie · 09/09/2006 20:20

dd1 was yr 1 last year she didn't get anything other than reading books.

Gobbledigook · 11/09/2006 16:32

Ds1 is in his second week of yr1 and today he's brought home his spelling book.

They'll be getting 10 spellings to learn for the following week. We did his walking back to the car and he did them all easily. They are pretty easy so far though - the ones I can remember are am, get, I, wish, fish, shut, shop, clap, shampoo -oooh, what was the other one?? I can't remember!

LizP · 11/09/2006 20:24

3 reading books a week (but meant to be reviewed on second day) - 10 spellings a week and a maths work sheet once a week.

geogteach · 11/09/2006 20:35

We got a homework timetable today (in year 1?!).
10 mins reading every night, also, 10 mins maths Mon (this week practice counting 0-30 and 30-0), 10 mins literacy Wed (this week review all jolly phonics sounds learnt last year) and 10 mins RE or topic on Fri (find a religious picture from an old christmas card). This is a big step up from reception and not terribly popular with DS
