Dd is going into Yr 1 on Wednesday. Can anyone tell me what they will be doing this year as dd tells me her teacher warned them it would be HARD!!

ds is starting y1 tomorrow and im led to believe they still incorporate alot of play with the work, my friends dd is starting y2 and i believe there are no toys in her new class room...much to her dismay. So i think they still get it quite easy for another year.xx

Issymum · 04/09/2006 16:39

DD1 is also going into Yr1 tomorrow and I keep hearing this and wondering what it means. My impression is not that the work is any harder in itself just that there is a lot more of it and consequently they do a lot less playing. I don't want DD1 to go back to school.

SoupDragon · 04/09/2006 16:40

Personally, I think that in a "good" school, the children wouldn't notice a difference. Certainly in DSs school, the transition is constant throughout the year so the end of Reception isn't a whole lot different to the start of Y1 but the end of Y1 is a fair way from the start IYSWIM. Ditto from Y1 to Y2.

Gobbledigook · 04/09/2006 16:53

No idea. Ds1 goes into yr1 tomorrow.

When i told him it was school tomorrow he started whining and saying he didn't want to go. Which is odd as he loves it! I think he's just forgotten how much he likes it. I hope I'm not going to get 'a scene' tomorrow morning because I personally am ecstatic that term is starting

LIZS · 04/09/2006 16:55

dd also going into yr 1 on Thursday. Classroom is a bit more formal with fewer toys. Not sure exactly what the expectations are as ds missed it out !

emkana · 04/09/2006 16:59

Dd1 also going into year one.
At her school they told us that there was still lots of playing, so we'll see.
Dd1 is very excited because she can't wait to learn joined-up writing, she says.

southeastastra · 04/09/2006 17:01

my son is going into year one too tomorrow. i'm very nervous for him and hope he will be able to keep up with the rest of the class, he is only just 5 argh

LIZS · 04/09/2006 17:04

dd just turned 5 too, southeastastra . She seems to have kept up fine so far though, so not too worried atm but think it would be more difficult for a boy.

Bozza · 04/09/2006 17:06

Well I've not got much out of DS about his first day - but that is par for the course - some of the children were crying but DS was vying for who had the most exciting holiday. There are definitely less toys in the room and they have literacy and numeracy hours in the morning. Oh yes, at our school, reception and nursery have their own playground with bikes/scooters, play equipment and sandpit etc. DS says "there is nothing to do in that big playground" in a scornful voice. But apparently he is allowed to take one toy that will fit in his tray in with him. So we have been discussing what he is allowed to take because he will invariably damage/lose said item.

trinityrhino · 04/09/2006 17:07

mine started last year, she was reading by xmas, scary it was

southeastastra · 04/09/2006 17:07

yes i think he will struggle a bit but fingers crossed

Gobbledigook · 04/09/2006 17:11

Oh God, please don't let ds1 cry - I can't stand it!!!! Not in yr 1 - it's not exactly a new experience. Oh, I'm not goin gto be happy if he blubs (yes, very sympathetic me!).

Kaloo20 · 04/09/2006 17:21

In the classroom DS learnt about dinosaurs in Y1

In the playground, where we all know the real lessons in life occur, he learnt how to make your underarm fart! and that if you get tackled and football and lose, shout Red Card or Yellow Card loudly (???)

In the Reception playground he learnt to whistle and how to click his fingers!

danceswithmonkeys · 04/09/2006 17:27

Hi

I'm KS1 teacher. Don't panic girls! Yes, Yr1 is very different to reception. Alot less 'child initiated' time and less 'learning through play' but we don't just sit them at desks facing a black board. There's still alot of hands on activity. If you want to know details of what they do then have a look at the literacy and numeracy strategies (they must be online somewhere...I have hard copies still) and the national curriculum. Hope this is still up to date I've been supply teaching for a while (haven't taught full time since dd was born - 3 yrs ago) and everything changes so quickly

Fauve · 04/09/2006 17:29

I'm sure Martianbishop has posted a link before now to a site which tells you what's in the National Curriculum for each year. Although my dd's going into Year 4, I'll be hoping she or someone else posts the link again, so I can find out what Year 4 is doing. It's a good question, Pinotmum!

danceswithmonkeys · 04/09/2006 17:29

oh and whoever's child learnt about dinosaurs in year one - kudos to their teacher. I tried to 'deviate' from the national curriculum and do aboriginal painting in my art lessons and wasn't allowed to Mind you, the headteacher was a control freak b*tch

DD1's in a mixed reception/Y1 class, so I think the big transition for her is next year when she goes into a Y2/Y3 one. But I can see that she's ready for a bit more structured work and a few intellectual challenges, really. Mind you, having attempted with no success whatsoever to take her, plus a classmate, plus DD2 out for Culture this morning (the national gallery) I would quite happily consign her to Borstal just at the moment.

(Well, maybe not Borstal. More somewhere with Compulsory Culture. And Compulsory Eating Tea Your Mother Cooked You Out Of Organic Sodding Ingredients, Dammit.)

Mercy · 04/09/2006 17:33

dd is going into Yr1 on Wednesay too!

Similar to Bozza's ds' school, Nursery and Reception has a separate playground - and they are in separate building too, so it's going to be very different just in that respect. They also have to call the teacher Ms X as opposed to being on first name terms.

dd's classroom also has an interactive whiteboard apparently - what's that when it's at home??!

Can't believe my baby is starting 'proper' school. She's still so tiny - even if she does have a woobly tooth!!

Pinotmum · 04/09/2006 17:36

Thanks for the comments and the link - can't wait for her to learn arm farts

OP posts:
LIZS · 04/09/2006 17:38

ooh interactive white boards are fun(as long as the teacher is au fait with the software, lol!). It is like a touch screen computer screen for activities and games or they can present a lesson from the computer rather than write it up on the board.

Fauve · 04/09/2006 17:43

Thanks, danceswithmonkeys. Crikey, that's brilliant!

danceswithmonkeys · 04/09/2006 17:47

you are most welcome, I must learn how to do links. Interactive whiteboards are fun but nigh on impossible to write on... even 5 yr olds mock my cack handed attempts

Kaz33 · 04/09/2006 17:52

Another starting year 1 on wednesday here - just turned 5 in August. Had his party yesterday so at least he has seen most of the mates the weekend before.

I am petrified as although he hit most of his reception targets at the end of last term he continues to show no interest in reading. Fluctuating between "its boring" and "I can already do it" - so we have done no practice over the holidays

Bozza · 04/09/2006 17:55

Apparently DS did "construction" this afternoon. He's done nothing else since he got home either - although at home it goes under the name of lego.
