Kaz33 - are there any topics which he is mad about eg dinosaurs, cars, space etc You could try and find some simple non-fiction books on these topics and 'trick' him into doing a bit of reading! Easier said than done I know

my son's bottom lip started to go wobbly, but he went in with the rest. i don't know why i feel sad he has been in the school for ages anyway. it just feels like a bigger deal. hope he behaves himself! hope all others have a great day too !

When I asked my dd what she did yesterday (her very first day) she said she dressed up and played in the play area... I was puzzled but now I see it must be the norm at primary schools?

Oh and got a bit more out of DS "I love it in year one, mummy". Aw. Still don't know what he actually did. Apparently he had a burger in a bun and cucumber followed by apple crumble for lunch. Not great, but then his best friend who had gone to packed lunches "so I now what he is eating" had just eaten all his sweet stuff and left the bagel etc untouched.

dd was in yr 1 last year - if you asked her what the difference was she would say

  • there was no dressing up corner (think this is all she did in reception )
  • they had to actually sit down and do some work
  • she had to do a lot more writing
  • she got to read more interesting books
  • they started doing 'subjects' - so history, science etc.

The subjects are done very loosely (iyswim) - more an introduction to what they are - so e.g. in history they had to look at what toys children played with 100 years ago (that sort of thing) and in geography they all drew a map of the school. I think she really enjoyed doing things other than just writing and reading.

my DS4 starts Y1 tomorrow, he's looking forward to going back. I just hope the teacher remembers that when they went in for a day to try out the new classroom she said they could finish that work off when they were actually in Y1 - he hasn't forgotten !!

southeastastra · 05/09/2006 15:14

DD due to start tomorrow. Must confess, I have not much of a clue how year 1 will differ, other than I assume, more challenging work and perhaps not such a warm/fuzzy atmosphere.

I wonder how she'll manage, tbh. She seems to be very much in a mode of not listening, not following instructions, and challenging authority. Also, as an only child she'll have to get reacquainted with how to function as part of a group instead of being the centre of attention. I think/hope it will be good for her to get back into a school structure/routine.

Issymum - why don't you want your dd to go back to school?

cece · 05/09/2006 20:52

DD said she drew a picture of hersefl today - with 'boobies'

Let's hope the teacher didn't ask her about her picture!

Issymum · 05/09/2006 21:27

Earlybird: Why don't I want DD1 to go back to school? Just being wistful really. She and DD2 have enjoyed the freedom of the holiday so much, I feel sad about frog-marching them back into an institution. They've endlessly made stuff out of paper, glue, paint, junk and pipe-cleaners; played countless games of Hide and Seek in the garden; devised treasure hunts; dressed up; had pretend ballet lessons; built dens in the spare room; put on their rain coats and hats and pretended to put out a fire in the Wendy House; larked around on the climbing frame; been to the beach, the farm and Legoland; learnt to jump and in DD2's case dive off the side of our local pool; climbed trees in the garden; grown beans; held a pool party in DD2 bedroom for her cuddly whale complete with a paper swimming costume for Whaley; made mud soup and grass pizza and a hundred other things that are way too whacky to even begin to describe in a single post.

I just don't want such an idyllic time to end for them. They seemed just the right age (nearly 4 and 5 and a half) this summer to revel in being together, without fights (well very few) or rivalry. I rather suspect that may be a once in a child-hood thing!!

Earlybird · 05/09/2006 21:57

Issymum - sounds an idyllic summer, and I can understand why you wouldn't want to let go of such a special time. Our memories become so hazy with time, think you should print out those words and save them somewhere to remind you/them of a happy childhood.

(I've thought casually about printing off/compiling some of my posts here as a way of documenting aspects of our lives for myself/dd as they occured in real time.)

Kaz33 · 05/09/2006 22:01

No Issymum, I don't think it will be once in a childhood thing. If your kids get on, then they will continue to get on. If they are friends now, then they will be friends in the future, whatever happens.

My boys 5 and 3 fight like cats and dogs but they love each other dearly and would rather play together than anyone else. They make each laugh, DS2 loves DS1 imagination and the great games they invent and DS1 loves DS2 bravery and cheekiness.
